bleeding?

hi, so ill firstly apoligise now for probably giving to much information !
erm so yesterday i came on my period, and the last few times its been really really heavy. ( i take the pill and propanolol just in case that makes any difference) but this time round it hasnt been that heavy more just like brown. i went to the toilet before and had a number 2 and a wee ( sorry tmi) and when i looked in the toliet bowl the water was stained bright red as if there was alot of blood. is this normal? is this to do with my period or not? or more to do with my stool? its never happened before like that when im not on my period but has done it before when i have been... is it related to my stool ? or is it just period blood? ....
im 18
thanks !

If you decide to correct your profile, medhelp makes it easy- just go to your home page, where the left hand tab says "my home" and has an icon of a lock next to it.  The tab right next to it says "profile".  You click on that.  Once on your profile page, on the top left hand corner, right beneath your profile tab it says "edit" in small letters.  You click on it and can change your age information there.

It was not clear to me what you meant in your post "its never happened before like that when im not on my period but has done it before when i have been", so I addressed it both ways, to try to cover the bases.

I myself took birth control pills not for the purpose of birth control, but for heavy and irregular menses- I was right around your age at the time.  One time, they didn't instruct me properly about when to start the pills and I wound up having a two week period as a result.  I hope they told you when to start.  But ordinarily, I believe the birth control pills, when started at the proper time, make a person's menses not as heavy.  That is why it doesn't sound like the pill you are on is working the way it should for you and I think your gyn ought to know about it.

Also, they wanted me to take those pills for three months only, which was supposed to help regulate me.  Birth control pills can give bad side effects, like weight gain, light headedness, and even more serious ones, so it will be good if you don't have to be on them long term.  Have they tried to determine what might be causing your heavy menses?  I had severe endometriosis, but I didn't learn that until I had an emergency laporotomy.  That's one cause of heavy bleeding that they don't typically discover unless they do surgery, like the less invasive laporoscopy.  Hopefully, you won't have to go there, but if you have particularly painful periods, you might ask your gyn about it.

You are right, a person can get iron deficient very quickly (experience talking) and they ought to check your ferritin regularly when you have heavy menses like that.  Ferritin (your iron stores) my doctor says is the best indicator of what iron is doing in your body.  If it drops too low, even before your complete blood count is affected, you can have symptoms of iron deficiency- I say that because it happened to me before!  If you are feeling very tired, you REALLY want to get this checked out.

well firstly thank you both for replying to my question as i was worrying a lot. In reply to 'surgimenopause' i dont come on here that often and dont even think i know how to change details on here. It is my time of the month as id stated in my question that i had come on my period. As for the pill im not on it for birth control i have been on it since i was about 14/15 for really heavy and extremely painful periods in the hope to make them not as painful as they once were. In the past i have been checked for anemia and have been found not to be but that was a while ago so i suppose i could be now, i dont know. As for your recommendations i will be sure to try them and see if they work but since i wrote this question i havent been to the loo again ( sorry tmi) so unsure as to if the problem has gone or not. But thank you for your reply

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
If you are still having periods then the blood is from your heavy periods. If the periods have sopped completely (pad may show brownish discharge but if you strain for stool blood in vagina will come down), then the blood is coming with stool. Since there is blood which you can see, it is coming from the lower gut. This can happen in hemorrhoids, rectal polyps, diverticulosis (outpouchings from the bowel wall), inflammatory bowel disease, or dysentery.
In hemorrhoids the blood falls after the stool. In fissures it lines the stools. In all other problems the blood is mixed with stools.
If blood in toilet pan persists after periods or comes again when you do not have periods then please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Take care!

You should change your profile, since it says your 21 and you say you're 18.  But to your question, it depends on if it is your time of month.  A bowel movement can help a mense get going, if you were just having old (brown) blood previous to this.   I don't believe really, really heavy periods are normal when you are on birth control pills.  A gyn should see you about this.  They should definitely check your iron, including your ferritin (iron stores- best indicator of what iron is doing in the body according to my doctor).  Menstruating females, especially those with heavy periods, are very prone to iron deficiency anemia.

But, if you were not in your mense when you had that bowel movement, you will want to get evaluated by a GI (gastrointestinal) specialist.  One thing that can cause a lot of bright red blood in the toilet bowl can be an aggravated hemorrhoid.  If the doctor confirms you have this, they will want you to make sure your stools are soft so as to not irritate it.  Another thing they will look for is a fissure, like a cut, which also can get aggravated particularly by hard stool.  Again, a treatment goal is making sure you have soft stools so it has a chance to heal.  They would look for other things too.  I recommend you try zinc oxide ointment (often found in baby diaper ointment) if you are having any irritation feelings in that area.
