help!

I have some issues.  My son is 13 years old.  He has been sick for over a month and a half now.  He has a constant cough, chest pains and a constant headache.  He does not like to ask for medicines but is asking for tylenol  or advil A LOT now. He has been sick since October 8, 2009.  He saw the pediatrician and was diagnosed with tonsilitis then.  A few days later we were back at the dr b/c he wasn't getting any better.  He had the flu tests this time and we were told he didn';t have the flu. They checked his lungs and gave him an inhaler to use. Tried to go back to school, got worse.  Went back to the dr, given cough syrup and steroids to strengthen his lungs.  Says his throat hurts, dr decided he had some sort of reflux then and allergies.  Now he has always had allergies but I never knew allergies to cause all the rest of this stuff.  So came home with more meds.  A few days later we were back at the drs office, she sent us to the hospital for blood work this time to check for mono and pneumonia.  He didn't have mono but she said he had walking pneumonia and gave him another antibiotic, steroid, cough syrup, flovent inhaler, albuterol inhaler, and told to take tylenol or advil for the pain and headaches. A few days later back at the dr.  She thinks he may have a sinus infection at this point brought on by the z-pac.  Gives him another antibiotic to take and makes arrangements for him to see an ENT. He got a cat scan on 11/16/09 and saw the ENT 11/17.  ENT says his sinuses are clear, he has a few cysts on his tonsils, and wants to do allergy testing.  Told us to stop all medicines. This morning the cough is  back in full force, he feels like crud, head is killing him and he is aching everywhere. I have no idea what to do.  I have to send him to school but will probably be called to come get him.  I need direction.  I need a new pediatrician... I need suggestions as to what to do.. Help... Please...

Well, he is still sick. They have now homebounded him from school. He is going to have a lung cat scan this week.  The pediatrician is trying to get him in to see a pulmonologist with no luck yet. The cough is still here, the headaches are terrible and the chest pain is still here.  He is also complaining of his throat hurting.  I feel helpless at this point.  He just looks ilke he doesn't feel well.  We use a humidifier for him daily now and try to keep his bed changed too.  Keep him warm and give him meds to try to alleviate some of it... Any tips to make him more comfortable? being sick this long is taking a toll on him.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
A cough is generally a result of an irritant such as stomach acid (gastric reflux), mucus (asthma), hair spray, perfume, dust, pollen, mold, even spicy food (all for allergies, it could also be a perfume or spray at home), post nasal drip, or infection. All these have to be ruled out one by one.
Ideally you should consult a chest specialist. Once the tests for allergies are back, you will come to know if he has any allergies. If it is due to air conditioning, you will have to use a humidifier. If it is due to asthma, then proper treatment will have to be done. If mold is the culprit, then you will have to get your house checked for the source.
Gastric reflux too could be the cause.
There was something in his lungs. Hence the doctor started some treatment. Get tis evaluated by a chest specialist.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
