hip,leg, and back pain

i am a 34 yr old mother who started out having pain from low back down to the toes. since august of this year its gotten worse. ive had 6 cortisone shots and all it did was give me thrush. did month of therapy and now im worse then before. my hip on the same side ive been getting the leg and back pain wont stop popping. my neruo dr told me for a week to do a exercise for my hip since it was out of alignment. well now it wont stop popping and its so painful 24/7. they wanted me in wheelchair and i settled for a cane. im so unsteady and my hip pops bout 2 to 4 times a day. im waiting on a day to go get MRI done. i just hurt so much and would like any thoughts.

thank u very much for all ur thoughts. my mri was done of my right hip. they were thinking i had something torn due to the hip popping. my neurologist actually gave up on me. he said after therapy and etc he cant find anything else to do that's why he sent me to the surgeon. i go in the morning. you mentioned something bout hip alignment. my therapist and dr noticed something like that. so my dr had me do these exercises every day for 7 days. i laid on the floor and placed a pillow under my calf of my bad leg. i would have my hubby help me. i had to push down with bad leg and pull up with good leg. my hip popped every time and now it wont stop popping and it pops now alot more. so much so i use a cane cause when it pops i fall. my low back to my toes hurts bad but i believe the exercises he had me doing made it worse. your right bout my job for 5 yrs i drove semi cross country. then i worked in a factory till i got laid off now i work at a nursing home. i do alot of lifting and moving. ill post what the dr says. thank u and take care

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
A wrong posture on a job that involves sitting for a long time too can precipitate this.
History of taking injections in the buttocks in the recent past should be looked into. A number of times old injection sites start troubling if undue pressure is put on them as in prolonged sitting. This will respond to hot water bags below the buttocks at night or kept for sometime while sitting too.
Another possibility is ischiogluteal bursitis. This is inflammation of the bursa that lies between the ischial tuberosity of the pelvic bone and the tendon of hamstring muscle. The bursa may show inflammation without any cause or in association with hamstring tendinitis or inflammation of tendon of hamstring. The pain increases on stretching.
Myofascial pain or trigger points in the Gluteus medius muscle and Piriformis muscles of the buttock can cause pain in the buttock area which may radiate to thighs. Stretching the muscle increases the pain.
There is a chance that you have compression of the spinal nerves in the lumbo-sacral spine region. This can happen due to overuse of the lower back as in work requiring too much of bending, lifting weight, fall on the back, overweight, canal stenosis, bone disease, spondylosis, poor posture etc. A MRI of the spine will be definitely required (was the MRI of spine or hip?) and nerve conduction studies may also be needed. The treatment is to remove the compression. You have to discuss the best treatment option with a neurologist, which can range from medication to physiotherapy to traction, lumbar belts, lumbar corsets or even surgery.
Actual hip dislocations are usually seen in accidents. You could be having poor hip alignment due to some other cause.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Do consult your doctor when you see him on 29th. Take care!

well i got my mri done and went for results monday. i had my hopes up to high to have it crash down on me. he said my mri was fine. the dr said sorry there is no more i can do for u and i just cried. thank god my mom was with me and said no give us a option. so he said for me to go see the surgeon anyways. so i cant see him till the 29th. im so frustrated and the hip popping is getting worse. if i bend over it does it -if i get out of bed it does it. pain is still all the way to my foot. hope u all are well.

Oh wonderful, good for you!
My results said "early avascular necrosis".
Much different than what any doctor or myself thought were the problems. All along (almost 3 months now) every doctor either thought it was sciatica or thought it was nerve pain relating to my Multiple Sclerosis. I had to request the hip MRI myself. So, I am glad that you are getting one now, as opposed to later. Let us know what your results are as well!

I received my MRI results today. If you don't already have one scheduled, I would request an MRI of your hips/pelvis. The results sure helped me. Unfortunately, I had to request the MRI myself.

1st I will share with you that I've had 3 low back surgeries for degenerative disc disease so I understand; I really do. I personally have had everything done, besides surgery, to help with the pain but nothing worked. I tried cortisone and steroid injections. They increased the pain; it was as if they had injected liquid fire into my back.
I'd go for a 2nd opinion after you have your MRI and I'd ask doc to order a CatScan ASAP. It's your health. If something is popping or clicking; I was told you avoid that movement at all costs. Phy therp is extremely good but you have to find the right one. Do  your homework; not all therapist are good at what they do.
Lastly; you can't know if you're a candidate for surgery without the proper test but once you have the test results and you need surgery; educate yourself as to what the doc wants to do. I say this because some docs will use you as a ginny pig for new gimmicks. They inserted an agile system in my back and made me keep it in for 1 yr even though I was in excrutiating pain.  If you're not a surgical candidate than ask your doctor about a Neuro-stimulator.  It is similar to the device they use in phy therp. The tens unit with electrodes. But a normal tens units is like a Yugo and the Neuro-stimulator is implanted permanently; it is the Rolls Royce of tens units. My test run for one week is the first time in 6 1/2 yrs I was almost pain free.  I hope this helps. I'm a 48 yr old mother and I've been through it all. Also, excercise too soon can cause more harm than good. My situation was gradual; yours is warp speed. Make an appo with the best Neuro-surgeon available to you. Don't choose a doc according to personalities or you don't want to hurt their feelings by going elsewhere. Not a personality contest. Neurosurgeons are a different breed of cat. They typically lack bedside manner. Don't let that scare you; it's just the way they are. Look at his success rate and research him or her. I wish you the best of luck.  Sorry so long but I feel you need 2nd and 3rd opinion if necessary.  You started having pain in 8/10 and your almost ready for a wheelchair. MRI and CatScan are the only way anyone will know whats going on. If you haven't had these; how can the doc treat you if he or she hasn't seen whats happening on the inside. I wish I would've known this almost 7 yrs ago but you have to take charge of your own health and recover. I gave too much trust to the docs and didn't question them.  Doc's are people too; question them.  Best of luck!

Hi,
Well, all I can really say is that I certainly understand. In fact, even the same dates (since Mid-August)... progressively getting worse. I've been to the ER twice because of it. I've seen an orthopedic, a spinal surgeon, my neurologist, a physiatrist, and my regular doctor about this. I've had 4 x-rays, one MRI of my lower lumbar spine, and tomorrow I'm having an MRI of my pelvis region. I've tried numerous medications, including steroids. Mine also pops a lot. The pain is worse in the evenings/early mornings. I also have weakness in my left leg. I even fell down the stairs not too long ago due to this. I also use a cane occasionally. In my case, it's a bit more difficult because I have MS, so it may just be the MS causing nerve pain. But if you are in the same amount of excruciating pain 24/7 yours may be sciatica caused by something in your spine. I would push the MRI appointment to ASAP so you can get answers. I currently take nerve pain medication in combination with narcotic pain medication for this, avoid regular daily activities, and this seems to help. I am also going to an acupuncturist. Hope this helps! Please update me when you know something, and I will do the same!
Good luck!
