knee pain

i'm a dancer and I can't extend my knee anymore. I don't know what I did to mess it up. but even laying down i have to force myself to extend it. every time i get it extended it sends sharp pain from the lower part of my knee up to my hip bone. I'm only 20 so the thought of knee replacement scares me half to death. I can't start my career in dance until my knee is back to normal.. i've tried icing it, stretching it, biofreeze you name it i've probably tried it. the only thing to give it a glimmer of relief is the knee brace i have to wear now. the pain is on my right knee, it varies where it hurts but lately it's on the right outside part. sometimes when i'm sitting in the butterfly position the pain is in the same place but it extends to the front of my kneecap. i dont know what to do help!!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Consult an orthopedic specialist or a sports medicine specialist. A MRI of the knee needs to be done. There can be a ligament tear or a loose body inside the knee. This can be repaired by surgery.
No treatment can be prescribed for sure unless a confirmed diagnosis is made. Also depending on how much weight your knee will be able to bear, a sports medicine specialist or an occupational therapist can guide you regarding which dance forms you should opt for.
Your first focus should be on getting a diagnosis. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Take care!
