numb sore one side of neck and tingling fingers

Intermittently I get a numb sort of pain at the back of my neck, stretching into my right shoulder. I also get tingling and numbness in my hands. The doctor thought I may have had carpal tunnel, but I was given tests which said there was no difference between the two sides of my hands. Carpal tunnel gives numbness on the thumb side of the hand, but I can get numbness on the pinky side too. The numbness in my hand does go away if I hang my hand down or stretch my arm out fully. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi
Thanks for the update!
Well, I cannot tell you for sure that it is nerve impingement. There is no harm in discussing this with your neurologist. There is one thing you must remember that I have not examined you. Nor is it possible to share detailed history on net. It is not the same as talking face to face. Hence you have to depend on the doctor who is examining you. I can only provide suggestions based on the information available.
Yes, nerve impingement can worsen. It can also remain asymptomatic or with minimal symptoms for years. After discussing with your neurologist, you can find a good physiotherapist who can also help you.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Thank you very much for your reply. I just wondered if this 'nerve impingement' is something which needs to be dealt with. Is it likely to get worse? It is annoying at the minute, but I can cope with it. If it was not going to get any worse I would be able to manage, but I do not want to leave it if it is going to deteriorate. My doctor just said that it was not carpal tunnel and sent me away, so I assumed it was not considered a problem. Thanks again.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
This looks more like a nerve impingement at the cervical vertebral level. A MRI is definitely needed. Another possibility is involvement of the brachial plexus---especially if raising the arm above causes the symptoms to worsen. I would strongly recommend you to see a neurologist. Physiotherapy too can help you.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
