numbness in fore finger and tip of middle finger

I have numbness in fingers and pain down the arm for the last 3 weeks. I have had x-rays and all is clear of my neck and elbow. I woke up one morning and found that i had slept with my right arm behind my neck for how long i'm unsure and when i went to reach up to grab something from the pantry i felt the pain shooting down my arm and the burning in my fingers and they are still numb.
regards,
malmac

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Your symptoms could be due to carpel tunnel syndrome. In this the median nerve is compressed at the wrist in a place called the carpel tunnel. Symptoms begin with numbness and tingling of the first three or two fingers from the thumb side. Nerve conduction studies are quite diagnostic. Treatment is usually by splints and steroid injections. Surgery may be required in some cases. This condition is common in those who use the key board, mouse etc a lot—like in computers or in typing jobs. The median nerve can also get compressed at the armpit where there is a bundle of nerves and blood vessels called ‘brachial plexus’. Please consult a neurologist. Take care!

Hi. I am a massage therapist. It sounds like you may have pinched the brachial plexas. Have you ever had a massage? I think if you get one in the neck area, mainly the scalenes, SCM, and the levator scapula, it may help. Just a thought.

Hello
It is possible to pinch a nerve or cause nerve damage in an area from sleeping on it and cutting off circulation(blood flow) for an extended period of time to the area. My guess would be your neck is the culprit but it could be in your shoulder area, as well.   Most of the time when this happens your arm is just asleep when you have slept on it.  You are able to shake it around and get the circulation to return to the area but if the nerve gets pinched off too long or remains pinched it blocks the circulation from being able to return and you have the numbness and pain, and can have nerve damage as a result.  Continue to try to move it around, and roll and stretch your neck maybe you can eventually stretch the areas enough to unpinch the nerve.   A pinched nerve will not generally show up on x-ray but usually type of symptoms determines the cause.
I Hope This Helps Good Luck Brenda
