toxicity

Can you really detox your body of accumulated metals?
I do not think it can be done by all these detox diets, but feel my body needs to rid itself of toxins. I don't sweat much at all; am 55 and want answers to this question for my health and well being.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
At 55 if you feel you sweat less, need to detoxify the body, then this could be due to menopausal syndrome. Please get a complete hormone panel ESH, LH, estrogen, progesterone and see if there is an imbalance. Hormone replacement therapy will help. With metal toxicity, certain chelating agents are given which bind with the metal and remove them from the body. Normal detox diet will not take care of that. It basically increases the antioxidants in the body.
Hope this helps. Take care!

I trust pretty much all the information I read from the Mayo Clinic site.  Here is the information I was able to locate for you. I have no idea if detoxing really works. Leave it up to the professional to help you with that one :)  Here is what a nutritionist from the Mayo Clinic had to say about them.....

Question
Detox diets: Do they work?
Do detox diets offer any health benefits?

Answer
from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.
Detox, or detoxification, diets are popular, but they're not scientifically proven.

Detox diets are touted as a way to remove toxins from the body. Specific detox diets vary — but typically a period of fasting is followed by a strict diet of raw vegetables, fruit and fruit juices, and water. In addition, some detox diets advocate using certain herbs and other supplements along with colon cleansing (enemas) to help empty the intestines. Most detox diets last seven to 10 days.

Some people report feeling more focused and energetic during and after detox diets. However, this may be due to a belief that they're doing something good for their bodies. There's little evidence that detox diets actually remove toxins from the body. Most ingested toxins are efficiently and effectively removed by the kidneys and liver and excreted in urine and stool.

It's also important to consider possible side effects. Among other problems, detox diets can lead to:

Dehydration
Fatigue
Dizziness
Nausea
If you're considering a detox diet, get the OK from your doctor first — and remember, the best diet is a healthy diet based on fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean sources of protein.

Thank you so much. I will get those tests and start looking for chelating agents. I am having trouble with my tendons in various places in my body and am currently getting KMI bodywork done. This is helping a lot. Hope to inhance her work with the detox. As long as I find the right detox agents it cannot hurt so why not try.
Thanks again
