You may have already have been exposed to the virus before. This is why it is called the "Kissing Disease" you can get it from someone who has the active virus through kissing. Because it is a virus, different people will be affected differently depending on their immune system.
My son had it extremely bad in when he was in his 20s and had to be hospitalised because his throat was closing up and it has not recurred again. He is 40 now.
Only the mouth swab test and a blood test will confirm what you have.
I dont know if this is good or bad. I read one place said it can be re occurring, another said a person becomes immuned to it afterward.
I also read that there is a incubation period of 4 to 6 weeks. So I don't know if this could be it, since the contact was only 4 days prior.
By the symptoms that you describe it sounds like you have a condition called "Kissing disease" This is a name for infectious mononucleosis ("mono"); this is a very common illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). This is what will be causing the white spots, the sore throat and why your neck is swollen.
This is a virus and an antibiotic will not treat this. You need to take things easy and rest and drink plenty of fluids, warm drinks - honey and lemon is soothing. Use throat lozenges for relief and pain killing medications for the relief of pain. You can also gargle with salty water and spit it out.
You can get fungal infections from contact and also from taking antibiotics. That would not make your throat swell. The doctor can arrange for a swab to be taken from your throat and mouth and get it sent to the laboratory for testing. This would then show what any virus, bacteria and fungal problems. It would depend on the results as to whether you would receive any treatment and the type of treatment.
Fungal infections in the mouth are treated by Daktarin oral gel (this can be purchased from the pharmacy without a prescription) or Nystatin drops (on prescription only). It is best to wait for the results of a swab.
If there is any fungal problems, you may be prescribed with an oral fungal treatment or anti-fungal medications to take by mouth. The doctor would determine the dosage and the length of the course of antifungal medications.
The doctor treated me for Gonorrhea. She said it may be overkill because its possible that it wasn't that, but I got it just in case.
I think you have done the correct thing by getting the test. You may well have a common yeast infection. I am assuming since you had the test you saw a physician, did the doctor put you on any type of medication at all? Usually when you have white "spots" on your tonsils it is tonsillitis or strep throat, but in your case with the additional exposure to a body fluid it can be a transmittable candida infection or other form of STD. It would be wise to stop drinking alcohol during this infection and until your symptoms not only have subsided but you have finished all medications. Alcohol will render any anti fungal medication or antibiotic prescription you were given by your physcian.
