why is there swelling with groin pain?

swelling on left side...difficulty walking, sharp aching pain when laying down,

You most likely have an inguinal hernia.  Inguinal hernias present as bulging in the groin, and can often be confused with swelling. I would definitely recommend consulting your doctor as they will be able to clinically correlate your symptoms and diagnose you appropriately.
