Adult Male Incontinence

Hi there I have a concern, I have had this problem for at least 2 years may be more cant remmember how long exactly. Basically im a Male, 26, and live in a home. I have a problem with my bladder ie urinary since I went into a mental health hospital on section after trying to take my life. Ever since I was diagnose with depression, anixety as well I also have Pulmonry Valve Atresia (Heart Conditon), I also have learning disabilty as well which is mild. My sister died when she was 18 years old and hence my mental health problems kicked in. Back to the bladder problem, at night for about 2 years ive been having accidents at night and im embarresed to tell my staff and alsoi ive tryed everything I can think of ie even not drink so much before bed and during the day but then I struggle to swollow sometimes and scared thats why i drink alot of fluid. I empty my bladder before bed some times work sometimes dont. Just stuck in what to do and whats wrong with me? I have been to my local GP but they was rubbish and focked it off. I try telling the owners here but they said its because I drink too much which I do I try cutting down but because of my swolling problems im scared and worried! What shall I do? This is genuine and im not attention seeking or nothing like that so please dont be horrible about it, it took me guts to write this. Thanks any advice be appricated.

They would have to determine how bad the bed wetting is. I can see their point of being concerned that it would cause skin problems. The thing is that if you were to use products like Tena or Depends, there is contact of urine to a much larger area of the skin. In the case of an external catheter there is only the penis or even just part of it that is in contact with urine.

With wetting the bed on a regular basis, there has to be a smell that would indicate what is taking place. If you see a doctor on a regular basis, talk to him or her about the problem and possible solutions.

If they don't seem to be concerned about the problem, then perhaps they need to consider having a plastic liner on the mattress. To me it just does not make any sense. You would end up with soaked underwear or pijamas every night.

Do they change the bedding every day? I have been in hospitals very often and have not had this where they changed the bedding every day. Just at the local hospital they keep a close eye on it because they are aware of my problems.

There are external catheters that just attach to the glans of the penis, leaving the rest of the skin dry. There also is a what they call a sheet. It is basically just a havier latex condom catheter but instead of using glue or things like that, there is an inside sleeve that goes over the head of the penis just keeping to tip of the penis is contact with urine. The device is held in place by an elastic strap device simmilar to an athletic supporter. There is no problem with glue or anything that is harfull to the skin other than being allergic to latex possibly. I have one but I can't use it as the waist band contacts my indwelling suprapubic catheter. It causes irritation of the stoma.

You have to talk to the staff or doctors involved, there ar potential solutions.

Keep me updated?

All the best,

Ron

First off we have to clearify two things.

1. You do not have any owners, they are care givers or custodians. No one owns you nor should you view your care givers that way.
2. There is no embarrisment about having accidents. I  used to think that way too, but have been in hospital on so many occasions where they were dealing with my genitals. At times I have had accidents.

I believe that you need to mention this to your care givers. Even though there are disposible protective underwear like Attends out there they don't work if larger amounts of urine are passed.

I have a defect called a neurogenic bladder, meaning that at times I have no control over my bladder making it either impossible for me to urinate, or leaking urine from the penis on a constant basis. I used to the protective underwear but found it to be useless because of the amount of urine produced. It also causes smells.

One thing that has helped me is condom catheters. They worked better for me when I still was able to get semi erections as it makes it easier to place the catheter.
Condom catheters will work on both uncircumcised and circumcised penises. The condome catheter is roled onto the penis and is succured with either glue or an inflatable balloon. Either a legbag or night bag attatches to the catheter to collect the urine. It will most likely mean that the care giver, nurse will be handling your penis to place the catheter. If you don't have problems when awake the catheter can be removed when you wake up. In the case of catheters with glue, the condition of the penile skin needs to be monitored on a daily basis. If there is irritation or breaks in the skin then protective underwear should be used untill the skin off the penis heals.
To remove the condom from the penis, it is either done during bath time, but it can also be done by applying a warm wash cloth onto the penis, making it easier to remove the catheter.
For me this has been a great solution. Currently I have some problems with no longer being able to get an erection making it more difficult to put the catheter on. Due to no longer being as active as I used to, my penis sort of retracts into the pubic area. At times it will cause the catheter to come off. There are special catheters available for such cases but for me it has to be approved by the Alberta govenrment.

You havemy permission to print this email oof and show it to your care givers if that will make things easier for you.

Keep me up to date.

God bless,

Ron
