Alternatives to intermittent catheterization?

I'm a 35 year old male which Spina Bifida.  I usually use a catheter intermittently as i can't empty my bladder normally.  I have had 3 urethrotomies in the last four years because my urethra has narrowed due to use of the catheter. My urologist tells me that my urethra has a lot of scarring due to the use of the catheter and thinks i may not be able to self catheterize for much longer.  He thinks i am not a candidate for reconstruction of the urethra for some reason.  I'm not sure what that reason is though.  What are my options?  Is there anything that can help me to keep self catheterizing as i am happy enough doing so right now?
