Frequent Urination

Hi

I am urinating quite frequently since yesterday. Also feeling little tired since then. I do get some days in between when I need to urinate quite frequently.it goes away by itself, but is very irritating for that period. My fasting glucose level is 6.2 mmol/lt. I was diagnosed with Prostatitis last year around same time. Dr. did some massage and since then was OK. It has appeared again.I am working in the UK and going back to my country after 25 days. Please can somebody tell me if I can get help from my GP and wait for 25 days.

Hi,

I suggest you don't apply anything on the cut.If it is a small cut that does not bleed profusely then it's not something to worry about. Refrain from applying any OTC medications as this may irritate the skin. Do not unnecessarily touch the area and only wash the area with a mild and bland soap.Small cuts usually resolve spontaneously . Avoid wearing tight underpants and after urination or taking a bath just dab the area gently.Do not rub.

Seek consult once you are back home. Do keep us posted .

Hi

I am quite better now and urination quite in control. I went to my doctor last friday and since I am going back to my country in 9 days, he suggested that I get checked by a urologist there and there is no immmidiate concern.

However, since yesterday I noticed a cut on my foreskin. It is bit sore and hurts when I pull it back. Can that be a after effect of frequent urimation. is there any home remedy or cream which I can apply for this.

Hi,

Have you been taking a lot of water lately?

Try keeping a journal where you can log in all necessary events including amount of water intake and number of times you have urinated. Observe your symptoms until you have complied with your medications.

A repeat urinalysis may be done after the antibiotics or your doctor may opt to do a scan or some tests to rule out incontinence ( urge incontinence)  Was a prostatic secretion culture done with the urinalysis?

Incontinence, a urinary tract infection ( in the absence of bacteria in the urine), chronic prostatitis or interstitial cystitis are differentials. These are just differentials and I do not want to alarm you by mentioning these. It is best to discuss these with your physician during your consult.

My urine test results are out and they are normal. I consulted primary care yesterday and they suggested to continue the medicine. I took one last night and one today morning. I am feeling quite fine except that the urinary frequency since morning has increased a lot. I am feeling to urinate every 10-15 minutes. What can be the cause of this. I have arranged a meeting with doctor tomorrow.

Thanks Vanessa.

I have started Ciprofloxcin since yesterday. Took 2 tablets yesterday and 1 today morning at 9:30. I was feeling very good in the morning, but after around 2 hours of taking the morning dose, I started feeling very tired. It's 14:00 now and I am still feeling some pain in the legs and very tired. Can that be a side effect of the medicine. Besides I am not feeling to eat anything. My urine test reports have to come tomorrow. I am quite worried.

Hi,

I see your concern. Actually this differs from person to person.A lot of factors have to be considered like the immune response of the person, the severity of the disease, bacterial load, the presence of other conditions like structural anomalies, other related kidney diseases, vascular and cardiac problems .So time to infection spread is not something that we can be very definite about. For as long as you keep a healthy lifstyle and get the proper management then you are a step closer to resolving any infection.

Thanks Vanessa.
One more thing . When it's said that delay in treating UTI can lead to Kidney infection. Delay means how much delay . How quickly does the infection spread ? I in my general routine many a times have urinary frequency increased, which settles down itself after 3-4 days, but can't go for a checkup everytime. Can I have any test to ascertain the reason for this.

Hi,

Yes,start on the medications already. These are antibiotics and they may given as an empirical treatment. The results of your urinalysis will simply supplement or strengthen the diagnosis of a UTI.Your clinical presentation of urinary frequency and a previous history of prostatitis increase the chance of this as being an infection.Take the medications so that after completing your holidays, your physician will be able to assess your response to the medications.A repeat urinalysis or urine and prostatic secretion cultures may be done depending on your consult.

I got checked by the doctor on 07/02/08 and he after initial look at the urine sample (tested on a strip) prescribed two tab. per day of ciprofloxacin 500 mg. I have not started the medication yet. I am feeling fine now. I was at holiday till yesterday 11/02/08 and did not want to take the medicine on holidays when I was out of home. The urine test results are still awaited. I read an article on net today which says that the medicine should be started even before the tests results are out. Shall I start taking the medicine before the urine test result.

In addition to above, I am having some strange sounds in bowel, like it is empty. Last night I urinated 3 times, and I had taken water 1 hr. before urinating. Since morning I am feeling OK , but there is little pressure in the groin area. Having some discomfort (not pain) around the rectum also.

Hi,

Increase in urinary frequency may not necessarily need an intensive initial assessment.A consult with a primary physician at the moment may be able to give you proper assessment and management for your condition. With a previous history of prostatitis, it is possible that this may have recurred. Waiting for three weeks may not be cost effective and your symptoms may progress without primary consult and intervention.

Do keep us posted.
