Our 5 year old neighbor was born with only 1 kidney, and now drs have diagnosed him with Wilms Tumor. I have found a lot of research on the Wilms Tumor, but I cannot seem to find anything about Wilms Tumor and renal agensis. The drs do not want to do surgery since it is his only kidney. They have recommended chemotherapy immediately. Is there any other info you can give me regarding this? Like I said, I have not been able to find anything about Wilms Tumor in children born with only one kidney. Thanks so much for your time.
There is no relationship between Wilms tumor and renal agenesis of which I am aware. The issue is the management of Wilms tumor in a solitary kidney. You can find information on this by searching on Pubmed.org (National Library of Medicine web site). The NCI (National Cancer Institute) has an excellent web site regarding Wilms tumors ( http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/wilms/HealthProfessional ) but does not address solitary kidneys, per se. I would consider the information regarding bilateral Wilms tumors as the closest you may get to guidelines. Campbell's Urology and Kelalis-King-Belman: Textbook of Clinical Pediatric Urology are two of the standard urologic textbooks that you might consider if you have access to a hospital or medical school library.
Hope that this helps.
