Ureteral Stent complications

I was admitted to the hospital the first week of October for a kidney stone which I wasn't able to pass.  A stent was placed for a week to clear any possible infection and to help pass the stone, it didn't pass so earlier this week I was given the wave surgery, Lithrotripsy?, which broke up the stone and was removed with the basket.

Another stent was placed after that surgery to keep the passage open and prevent infection, it is supposed to remain 10 days until Friday of next week.

My doctor lacks communication and I've yet to get decent answers to possible complications.  I've had a stent for going on 2-3 weeks now and have another week ahead of me and still don't know much about the possible issues and how to maintain the stent.  I'm trying to increase my fluid intake but it is to the point I'm drinking so much I am losing a lot of sleep and by asking this am hoping to rest my mind a bit until it is taken out next week so I can actually get some rest.

I've been told, not by a doctor but someone I trust, that impotence and erectile disfunction is a possible long-term side effect even after stent removal..?  Other than the standard discomfort, light bleeding/puss and frequent urination, what are realistic "serious complications" of a stent and how much water should I be drinking?

Here is it, 4 am in the morning, and I'm reading this post 18 hours after my lithotripsy. I've had kidney stones for a total of 8 months. About 4? months of having progressively worse pain, I finally mustered the courage to see a urologist (I'm terrified of doctors... I would rather walk on broken glass or hot coals.) When I saw him, (which was actually a month later since that is when they scheduled my appointment, making it 5 months with the stones) although he couldn't see the kidney stones via ultrasound, he could see that my left kidney was very swollen. He told me for the time being they were treating it as kidney stones, prescribed me some meds, and scheduled me a CT scan that following Monday. All goes well, however they schedule my next appoinment 1 month after my CT scan!?! Utterly confused by this (considering the stone (although it didn't) could've passed way before the urologist ever saw the CT scan...saving us a wad of cash ) I continued in pain, as I became immune to the severe pain killer they gave mere 3 days after taking it.

My next appointment finally came, making that 6 months with the stones. My doctor said I had two 3mm stones, one in each kidney. He also said I had a rare disorder called cystinuria, which is an inherited, incurable disease that causes stones made of the amino acid cystine to form. In other words, I'm a stone factory, and although it can be managed, it can not be cured. He then proceeded to tell me to keep doing what I've been doing, because there was no available treatment for me at the time. He did say that if they got stuck on the way out, they would go in after it.

Words fail to describe how disheartened I was by the whole ordeal. It already took me a long time to muster the courage to visit a doctor, only to be told that there was nothing that could be done for me. Fast forward to 3 months later. It is January of 2017, I've had these stones since May of 2016.  These stones have affected every area of my life. They've caused strife between me and my family, and friends, due to my distant behavior. The worst part about kidney stones is that it's an illness that can not be seen, and having them for an abnormally long time... people either forget you have them, or think you're over exaggerating, or plain faking. What makes it worse is that I have social anxiety, and while I've learned to manage it, it would seem any form of stress/anxiety causes my kidneys to flare up with pain, which in turn has made me incredibly anti-social... because... ya know... to be social means to be in pain.

For 8 months, nearly 9, I've missed going on adventures with my husband-to-be, since we're both very active. I miss working out. I miss simply taking a walk through the park. I miss being able to clean the house without major pain. I miss spending time with friends without sitting in the corner wincing and biting my lip to hold back a whimper.

With that in mind, I finally caved and went back to the urologist hoping they would do something. My kidneys, of course, were in the same condition. My heart sank when he told me that a lithotripsy was necessary at this point. He briefly explained the procedure, scheduled it for a week later, prescribed me more medicine... and that was that. He also told me to take 2 flowmax at a time, trying to prevent me from undergoing this surgery. Again, terrified of doctors as is, and now... surgery!? I began to research it, and from every professional site I could find, if didn't sound half bad. Not to mention people were telling me that it's about equivalent to getting your wisdom teeth pulled (Althoigh I wouldn't know what that is like either, since I've never had mine pulled) and that I would be fine.

Now, one of my close friends who's actually experienced it, decided not to sugar coat anything for me, and said that the stent they would put in is very painful. But he, too, assured me that it would be fine as long as I'm on pain killers.

Yesterday I underwent the procedure, since my stones still didn't pass even after a higher dosage of flowmax. Although I was scared out of my mind, everything seemed to go smoothly. One second I was looking up at the doctors as they were preparing things, the next I was waking up in the recovery station... only to find out they only worked on one kidney, which means I'll have to come back if I want to get the other done.

Nevertheless, as soon as I woke up, Immediately I felt the strong urgency to urinate, as though I had been holding it in for hours. The nurse gave me a pan, and I noticed that, although I urinated, there was no relief to this intense urgency/pain. I requested the pan back a few minutes later, but nothing would come out. The nurse then explained to me that it was completely normal. After they called my family in, they gave me a pill for the urgency (didn't help as far as I'm concerned.) As I was getting dressed, I could tell the  anastasia  started wearing off because I began having even more intense pain, especially when they wheeled me down to the vehicle. Every little bump felt like the end of the world.

My husband to be took me to his house to rest since he took the day off for me, and on the way I was in such horrible pain that I began to cry. I had my pain killers, but I didn't have any water. So he rushed home, I took the pain killers,  and basically sat in the restroom for 2 hours straight. It seemed like being in a position to urinate was the only way I could get somewhat relief--except--when I actually did urinate, it hurt so. freaking. bad. Finally I got somewhat stable and managed to come out. I was scared to death to drink water again because urinating hurt so much. Yet I knew I had no choice, so I did. I hated it. Every 10 minutes or less I had the intense urgency, yet hardly anything would come out, so I would just sit there for long periods of time praying for relief.... I was confused by this because I thought the stent was supposed to help you drain? Not prevent you? Anyways, I had to take intense pain killers every couple of hours, and had to sit in certain positions, and even then the pain wasn't totally masked.

Tonight, I fell asleep with little to no pain, only to wake up an hour later having that strong urgency again, as well as some nasty pain. Laid back down, woke up again an hour later with the same issue. Laid back down again, and this time I awoke with legitimately the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life. I took two more pain killers, and basically sobbed for an hour straight until they finally kicked in. It's now 5 am, and I only got 3 hours of sleep yesterday because I was nervous about surgery.. looks like I'll only be getting less than 3 hours tonight, too... I'm unbearably tired. To be honest, I can not imagine going through this again. The kidney stones, as bad as they are, are far more tolerable than this kind of torture. I want them gone... but... I can't. I just can't do this again. I'm hoping and praying the stone on my right side will pass on it's own, because I can not handle another procedure. I mean, the procedure in and of it's self I'm no longer scared of, it's this rediclous pain afterward. So I'm glad I found this forum, and that I'm not alone in this battle. I know I wrote a book, but I'm hoping to help anyone who's has a similar experience and hopefully let them know they're not alone.

wow. recently i went through the process of having a kidney stone removed and this involved a nephrostomy tube from one kidney out of a spot on my back and a stent placed both before and after the stone was broken up and removed.  and i was sent home without painkillers.  none.   this was pure hell.

I had 80% and 90% blockage in renal to heart arteries both side and doctor advised PTCA. He fitted metal wire on one side and baloon on the other. After that I was on medication (PanD, plavix, orofer, folinext, calpol, ecospirin, atorva nebistar, lomazep0.5 (in that order from morning to sleep time))ok with some problems of constipation and gases in stomach. On 5th day I had a fall (from standing to sitting position not head hitting). However, there was no sign of discomfort in groin or chest area.
Then around noon of 18 day I had mild stroke-and felt nausea-tic very week after that. Got BP checked next evening which was 149/79 and doctor said not to worry, it may just an adjustment phase. On 18 evening again I had stroke and went unconscious for 2 hours my bp went to 198/98. again I recovered and through medication bp lowered and felling ok in next couple of days. CT scan is ok.
But I am really concerned about will it recur, how to deal with this ( I stay 150 kms away from proper care centers in Kolkata and every time need to be rushed to) and why it is happening?

Last year (2014) I had a kidney stone complication.  I told the doctor I did NOT want a stent inserted.  On the day of the procedure to remove the stone I woke up and was told that the stone was not removed and they put a stint in anyway!  They said the stint would be in at least 3 months until the have the procedure.  For a month I was in severe pain and discomfort.  I kept telling the doctor something was wrong but was ignored.  I finally had my regular doctor do a urine test and I had a severe bladder infection.  I immediately had the stent removed and felt immediate relief.  But the after effect over a year later lingers.  I still feel discomfort and tenderness in the shaft of my penis and when I achieve an erection my penis is slightly curved and more than an inch shorter than it used to be.  Not only am I very self-conscious about it but sex is not as pleasurable because of the tenderness and my orgasms have lessened considerably.  Is there anything I can do about this???

Went to ER last week due to severe pain in my lower left side.  Was told a had a 1.2cm stone.  Had lithotripsy and stent placed on Tuesday of this week.  I specifically asked the urologist about the pain level and was told it would be "mildly uncomfortable"  Once the anesthesia completely wore off I wished I had just kept the stone.  It is Thursday and I have literally not slept since Tuesday before all of this.  I called my urologist yesterday and asked if I could take AZO for the spasms and he said it would be ok.  Several hours later the pain was even worse so I called again asking if he could give anything stronger than the 5mg Norco as they were not helping at all (I was told to take 2 at a time).  He said nothing he could do and that I should stop the Norco and take Ibuprophin and to try to do more walking.  By 8pm yesterday I was back in the ER with the worst pain I have ever had in my life!  I have had 2 C-sections, my chest cracked open to remove a benign tumor,a partial mastectomy and a full hysterectomy using the Davinci robot which malfunctioned resulting in me having to be cut open and having part of my colon removed (that's a whole story in itself).  My point is having been through some serious pain with these prior surgeries I can tell you NONE of them hurt as bad as this damn Stent!!  The ER docs gave me several rounds of morphine through an IV and it didn't help at all.  They then added Toridol and that gave me some relief for about 45 minutes. The CT scan last night didn't show any abnormalities but I do have a pretty bad UTI.  I am back home and it is starting all over again.  I can not understand why doctors don't tell you how bad this is..especially when I asked specifically about the pain.  Dr told me that I will have to do this all over again in about a week as the stone was so dense.  Not sure I would be able to handle this a second time.  Best of luck to all of you.  It's nice to know I am not over exaggerating as my Urologist makes me feel.

I am also a female with a stent. Go to emergency and insist it be removed immediately. My stent has been in 6 weeks due to insurance issues (I have obamacare which has been terrific until this). I just found out via ultrasound that mine appears to be broken and I am scheduled for removal on Monday the 15th. I am very scared because this has been extremely painful and I dont think its over yet. The fact that your urine looks like tomato juice is terrifying!  Get that thing out and Good luck to you.  Lindy

This is a follow up in a reply to myself. After visiting the emergency room again this morning, because after peeing every 5-10 minutes all night I begain to have extreme pain in the shaft of my penis and kidney pain again on my left side, I figured I should update what I found out. Turns out I was fortunate enough to get a blood clot big enough to stop the flow of urine from passing through my penis. The catheter they inserted to hel remove the blockage was so much fun I it felt oh so wonderful...NOT! the pain was much worse from this then the stent removal, and it still burns like I'm pissing fire out my pee hole. Along with the blood clot I have a UTI, just lucky like that I guess? Anyway, I'm praying that this UTI will clear up quickly and the pain will subside rapidly. May God bless you all.

Hi all,
I  am a 46 Yo male who took a nice long trip ( 47 miles )to the ER in what I would call the worse pain I've ever felt. Turns out I was dehtdrated , so  the ambulance ride was just as excruciating as the pain it self. Took the medic seven attempts to get an IV started because my veins kept blowing out. Finally got the IV started 30 miles later and a shot of morphine helped until we got to the hospital. The culprit was a 7mm kidney stone in my left uterer. Som more morpheme and I was sent home with a Rx for vicodine and to pass it this was on Jan 2, 2015. Some time in February I had taken my 3-4 trips to the ER because of severe pain. The last time the took action as my kidney was distended and the stone was now blocking the flow of urine from my bladder to my kidney. The did blast the stone with a laser and removed it. Spent the night in the hospital and every time I had to pee it hurt like hell and looked like I was peeing cranberry juice. I was sent home and told they had put a stent in me that would have to be removed in a week. The stent was just as bad as the kidney stone once the hospital meds wore off. Pain was unbearable and now the pin was also in the head of my penis. I felt like I had to pee every 5 min. I went and immediately felt like I had to go again. Was praying that God would take this pain and feeling away from me. When the day came to have the stent removed I was nervous but excited to finally feel normal again. I was told the removal word be uncomfortable but not painful. It hurt, on a scale from 1-10 it was an 8. Dr. Said I was more sensitive then most. I started to feel better the next day and even more so the next, but on the third day I was peeing out small blood clots and in pain again. Here it is March 2, two months to the day this all started and I have the pain and frequent urination back. I'm peeing every 5-10 min just a trickle and I'm wondering if this event is ever going to stop? I fel for all of you and may God Bless us and have mercy upon us all who are dealing with this. If anyone is having this same issue after a stent removal please let me know. I feel like im going through this alone.

This is not the first stent I have had, but it is the first to cause so much discomfort and pain. This is the 5th time around and for me each time has been different. Usually I don't feel them at all, but this time it's on the opposite side and all I think is " get this thing out of me now". But I'm having surgery tomorrow to have a 2 1/2cm stone removed.  All I can think now is "please don't put in another and if u do let me not have this pain and discomfort".

It is like having a wooden leg that will not obey you. had painkillers, but in vain. by the way, I have had a stent for 3and a half months and tomorrow should have it removed with local anaesthetic. have not had any problems while I had my stent. good luck!

Just had a 7.5mm stone lasered that lodged in my ureter.  The stent was replaced.  Was told to remove the stent today which I did.  The worst part of removing it is the anticipation.  The removal felt like sort of like a tampon removal.  I am in pain right now though.  I don't think my kidney liked that.  2 pain pills and a heating pad and I'm still in pain.  Hopefully this passes quickly.

Yes, I do have pain in my leg. I have had three stents in my right side ureterale since March. It's been seven months now. The last time the stent was replaced the urologist told me that it had been much more easier to insert and that this was a good sign. I will have a CT scan in about 4 weeks and if all goes well the stent should be removed early in November.

I realize that the ureterale stent experience is quite different for each individual. By experience I mean "pain". I deal with my pain with dilaudid 1-2 mg every 4-6 hours. Acupuncture, méditation, relaxation sessions are a great help to reduce pain for me. But overall I think it is very important to remain positive at all time. I truly believe that my attitude and the way I think about the stent and its purpose have a direct affect on the gravity of the pain I actually feel.

I visualise the stent in my ureterale helping my body

has anyone had leg pains with a kidney stent in place, it is a bit like cramp  and then it just aches and aches, pain killers do not help and I am getting so depressed because of the pain. If anyone can tell me what to do I would be grateful. I have had laser treatment for kidney stones and have had one stent placed for 3 months, one for 6 months taken out on 23rd August, and replace with another stent, hopefully this will be removed at the end of September. 2013

I need help!! I am a 31 year old mother of 3 boys, and i was diagnosed after several trips to the ER with a 5mm kidney stone. After finding a urologist the next day, he decided to remove it through shock wave therapy. After the procedure, he informed me that the stone disappeared, and he was unsure if it had ever actually been a stone. He put a stint in during the surgery because my right kidney has a huge obstruction and swollen because of urine backup. Later that night I had to go back to the ER and have the stint removed because it had fallen due to the massive size of my kidney, and let me just say, the pain was unbearable!
They decided to put a nephrostophy tube in to drain my kidney so that it can heal. Well, 2 weeks later, I'm back in the ER because it stops draining and there is fluid buildup in another part of my kidney, so they put a drain tube in to drain that part, now I have 2 tubes coming out of my back for my right kidney. I go in yesterday to hopefully get a stint put in so I can have one of these tubes removed, and of course I'm told when I wake up that it could not be done as something's twisted.
I'm in severe pain daily, and I'm worried my doctors do not know how to deal with this. I have to be put under at least every 4 days to have my tubes replaced, and I still don't have any answers to what's causing my kidneys not to drain.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was diagnosed with a 7mm stone in February 2013, give me pain meds and told to go home. Returned to the ER again 2 weeks later as i was literally crippled and they did another CT scan and it showed it moved downwards. Was admitted to the hospital, 4 days later i was transferred to another hospital 2 hours away so a urologist could blast it out with lasers. The urologist spoke to me and told me about the procedure. 2 days later i had the operation, after coming thru 2 nurses said they couldn't find the stone...??? I decided that morning to discharge myself out even tho i was in intense pain. 4 weeks later after dealing with blood clots, urinating blood and constant pain in the groin region and kidney area i had another appointment with a different urologist and had a another CT scan done a few days before hand tells me the reason I am having difficulties and complications is due to a urinary stent.  THIS IS NEWS TO ME AS NO ONE TOLD ME THEY HAD PUT ONE IN MY BODY. I almost lost it at the urologist's office at the thought that they would do this without my knowledge or consent. On Tuesday of this week i will be having it removed and have made formal complaints to the hospital and other proper venues regarding this matter.

I had a pyleoplasty done on Dec 12, 2012.  That means I had an obstruction in my uterer.  Because there was a main artery right over the obstruction they had to cut me open 9 inches. They place the stent from kidney through uterer to bladder.  I spent 4 days in the hospital.  The 1st 2 weeks I sat in a chair to recovery.  Once I got up and started going to the restroom I noticed pain.  Felt like I had a UTI x100!!!  My stent does not come out until the middle of next week.  I can feel the stent, it feels as if it has moved down further. I am on pyridium to ease the urine pain and vicodin for the actual surgery pain.  I cannot walk very far before I have to sit down.  I won't even go to town.  This has been one miserable surgery/recovery!!

Dunno where you got your doctorate, but "There is no chance of impotence or erectile dysfunction due to  presence of stent, because a stent is placed in the ureter which lands in the bladder, followed by urethra. The tract through which semen passes is completely different from the urinary tract. The place where both these tracts join is much below the ureter. So, don't worry. " is plain not true. My husband had his stent removed a week ago. He cannot get an erection for longer than a couple of minutes. Explain that?

I'm 19 and had my first kidney stone about 5 weeks back while I was on vacation in California. Apparently I only had a 2mm stone but it caused an excruciating amount of pain that sent me to the ER twice and resulted with me needing surgery as the stone became stuck and was causing a severe infection. After surgery when the stent was inserted I immediately felt relief no more nausea or pain however the stent itself was quite uncomfortable and the first few times I needed to pee it really burned however this seemed to diminish after awhile.

The one real complication that I had was the night before I was suppose to have my stent removed I accidentally pulled on it enough to dislodge it a bit but not enough to completely pull it out. This made me urinate uncontrollably and I was really scared and ended up just having to wait until the next day when I saw the urologist.

So far after stent removal I have had no real problems except for yesterday when I went to my doctor and they did a urine test and they said they think I have an infection again. They also said I had glucose (sugar) in my urine which does worry me but I don't know if this could be a result from having another infection? Because my blood sugar was perfectly normal when I was with the doctor.

I had a 5mm stone removed in outpatient same day surgery last Thursday. Monday I went in office to have the stent removed. I did feel better right away but slowly and steadily my right side (where the stone was) started cramping something fierce! By the time I got home I was in agony. Doc said to use a heating pad, and that made it worse.  2 Vicodin and 6 Advil later I was able to function again. Next morning it happened all over again.  Couldn't go into work. Today, 3rd day after stent removal and the pain is unbearable! No work today either. I cannot live on Vicodin. Lab results aren't back yet, but I think the right kidney is infected thus causing the sensitivity and cramping.  Part of me wishes I'd have kept the stone in! Plus the stress of all this seems to have started my period 10 days early. At least I hope that's why. the fact that the Vicodin does have an effect on it is good, no?
