Urine retention/self cathing & extremely frequent UTI's

My husband has several medical issues but the most pressing is the constant UTI's.  Since November 2007, he has had to be hospitalized at least 7 times with UTI's that require intravenous antibotics.  He is allergic to Bactrum and Macrobid, so is very limited as to different oral meds he can take.  He has Acute Urine Retention, has Parkinson's and is a diabetic.  He has had a TURP, but has not improved his ability to empty his bladder.  He has to do self-cathing several times daily, which is what is apparently causing the continuing problems with UTI's.  Any suggestions or helpful advice would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to read that your husband has come down with another infection.

It is important that the urologist will get to the cause of the problem. There has to be another reason.

I hope that there will be some sort of treatment.

Sincerely,

Ron

Thank you for your comments.  My husband uses the LoFric catherers and disposes of it after one use.  He uses sterile wipes as well.  He is a diabetic and does have problems controlling his sugar levels which I do know can lead to UTI problems as well.  He will see his urologist this week - has been out of the hospital 2 weeks and already has another UTI.  It is very frustrating and difficult for him to deal with.

Intermittant catherization  does not have to cause infections. I have used it to treat a prroblem with retention. It is better to cath than to have residual urine. I used to end up hospitalized with kidney infections 3 to 4 times a year. Now that I self cath, I stilll get some. Most of the t5imes they can treat it with oral Cipro 500 mg 2 @day.
It is improtant to use clean tecchniques while doing a self cath. I does not have to be sterile but clean. Try not to reuse catheters if you can, however I have been able to use 1 catheter per day to ensure that I empty my bladder. I usually do this before going to bed.
I'm a few days shy of 45 and was diagnosed as having a neurogenic bladder in 1996.
I also underwent a TURP as well as a bladderneck resection with very little success.
Clean cahterization has been of benefit to me.
I hope that this will give you an idea about clean catherization. Circumcised or not does not seem to make much difference. I was told that being circumcised is cleaner, however my own doctor did not recomend me to get circumcised.

Good luck,

Ron
