Urodynamics for a kid of 3 yrs

My kid had his Nephrectomy (right) at his 1 year age and is adviced to undergo Urodynamics for analysing his bladder capacity.  Need to know at what age is a urodynamics study suggestable in children.  We feel like he is too young to undergo this study.
Also, we are now using Oxybutynin - 2.5 mg per day through which he is able to sustain for 3 to 3.5 hours.  If we stop using that, the child starts a little drizzling in drops.  We are using this medicine since last 1 year.  And the doctor suggests it no harm in using for longer period.  Problem with this kid is that he is asymptomatic.  He is active enough and good in all other aspects.  Every six months we have the tests and assuring that the kidney growth and capacity is as per his age.

At what age he will be cooperative for doing this test?
Please advice whether the usage of medicine for longer period causes any side-effects in future.
Also suggests any further care to be taken for the kid.

Hi,
The safety of oxybutynin in children under 5 years has not been established. You can read about the effects of the drug at the link pasted below.

www.rxmed.com/.../b2.1.monographs/CPS-%20Monographs/CPS-%20(General%20Monographs-%20D)/DITROPAN.html

Urodynamic studies have been performed even in infants, children less than 1 year of age. However, children younger than 5 years have been considered unsuitable for invasive urodynamics as they are usually uncooperative and may require general anesthesia during the procedure.

The child's urologist will be the right person to decide on this and he/she will also refer the child to an anesthesiologist for an evaluation regarding the safety of any anesthetic procedure.

As you have not mentioned your child's age, it is not possible to assess whether he can have any other problems with the procedure.

General anesthesia does carry some risk of complications and will need to be evaluated in view of your child's age.

Do keep us posted on any further doubts in this regard.
