VCUG procedure in grandson

Today my grandson had a VCUG procedure done to check for reflux. He has been screaming and is in alot of pain. He is shaking and sweating. He finally urinated and then went to sleep. Is pain like this normal for this procedure? Can there be complications from this procedure?  What should we be looking for? When they did the procedure they used a larger catheder than they usually use. As they were putting it in they said that they were having a hard time getting it through and that maybe they should have used a smaller one. Maybe it hurt worst because of this? Please help.

My 2 month old son underwent MCU yesterday and is today crying very severely while passing urine and is also passing a lot of urine sometimes in drops and sometime with force.Does MCU introduces the chance of inducing urinary infection, pls let me know, in the meanwhile he is being given antibiotic cephalixin. Do i need to get the urine culture done urgently. Besides, his MCU result was grade 5 reflux in left kidney and grade 2 in right kidney. Any help will be much apprecited..

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.VCUG is a imaging method to check the urinary bladder and the lower urinary tract with x-rays. It is usually useful for determining vesico urethral reflux. Usually the procedure is painless, but some might experience discomfort and can be frightened. As, your grandson has experienced severe pain, it could be due to some obstruction the tract.
There are no complications usually reported with this procedure except for radiation exposure, but this is minimized by safety measures.
Is there any difficulty passing urine or blood in urine after the procedure? If yes, then a visit to the urologist is a must. Also, discuss with your urologist regarding the possibility of an obstruction the urinary tract.
Best.
