Vasectomy with a tight scrotum

I visited my urologist today to schedule a vasectomy. I am 48 yrs old and my scrotum gets real tight and tense  when I am nervous. The urologist said he wouldnt recommend a vasectomy as it could be a big deal (general anesthesia as my right testicle almost goes up into my body.  Sitting at home now my scrotum is loose and not tight at all.

He scheduled a ultrasound to see if there are any other issues.

Is this  really that big of a problem?

I had the same problem and had the same recommendation. I just had a vasectomy performed under heavy sedation which is a good thing because I have ten stitches (five on each side). My scrotum is swollen like a grapefruit and I'm black and blue up to my pubic bone. Having a small scrotum or a sensitive cremaster reflex definitely complicates what should be a simple surgery.

Did you end up getting it done yourself?

Hi,

I had a vasectomy in 2000 in the hope of not getting infections in the testicles as I used to.

I too had the testes retract when cold or nervous. I went ahead with the vasectomy thinking that all would be fine.

The first day everything looked OK and I had no pain. About a day later trouble started.
Second day the stitches on the left came loose. I went to see a locum doctor and was sent home stitched up. The following day my scrotum was purple and the size of an orange. The locum doctor sent me back to the general surgeon. Within the hour I underwent emergency surgery to remove a hematoma (blood clot). About a week later I was discharged as the swelling and infection had subsided.

Over the next year there remained a small fistula on the left side that would not close.
After about a year I was seen by a urologist for another problem by he ensured me that my scrotum and left testicle were normal and that I had nothing to worry about.

A week later I ended up in the local hospital with orchitis of the left testicle. Over the period of a week my scrotum now had become the size of a large grapefruit and had ahnced to black red. I was then sent to a city hostpital on my birthday to undergo an emergency orchiectomy of the left testicle. I had ended up with a staph infection and was now in isolation intensive care. After two weeks the infection was controled. They never closed the scrotum and packed the open scrotum with saline soaked gauze. I had sitz bath about every 4 hours and had the gauze changed. I was discharged after about 2 weeks. I went home with the scrotum still open as it was supposed to heal from the inside out. For the next 2 months my wife had to pack my scrotum with the saline soaked gauze untill the scrotum closed. Gauze was changed every four hours like at the hospital.

I made several mistakes, I had a general surgeon do the vasectomy and not a urologist. I was unaware of the no scalpel vasectomy. I did not go back to the surgeon immediately when I thought something was wrong. I was seen by a locum.

When I was seen by the urologist I knew that things were not right and I should have insisted on further infestigation. I could still have been living with 2 testicles and not one.

If you opt for the vasectomy, have it done by a skilled urologist not a general surgeon. Condoms are cheap and are a good form of birth control as well as having your partner use another form of birth control. Should you opt for the vasectomy, make sure to follow the urologist's instructions. If you suspect that something is wrong seek help of some doctor who is genuinely interested in listening to you. You know your own body better then a surgeon, you know when something does not seem right.

I hope that I did not scare you off. One good thing that has resulted for me is that I have not had and infections of the remaining testicle. I have had to get a hernia repaired on the remaining site. Knowing what I know now, I most likely would not have had to vasectomy. Doing this is a life altering decision. I'm glad that there are no infections and that I don't require to be in a hospital four times a year to be treated for testicular infections. I  got these infections due to having other urological problems, had it not been for that I would never have had a vasectomy. Children are a blessing If you feel that you have had enough children then birth control in the form of condoms an other devises are a small price. Just remember that and IUD is a form of abortion.

Good luck,

Ron
