White sediment in urine

What might cause me to have very cloudy urine (can't see through it), which develops a layer of white fine sediment at the bottom and an oily-looking scum on the surface after sitting for a short time? This has been happening every four or five days, for the first two or three voidings of the day, for at least two months. The rest of the time the urine looks clear and ordinary. I have mild discomfort in my back, quite probably unrelated, and mild discomfort when urinating, but no infection (tested), no fever, The urologist can't see me for three weeks; do I need to worry?

Thanks I got the same symptoms as you (urine milky cloudy , knee joint shaking when try to sleep, pee was discomfort twice then back to normal and my eyes sudently blurring and have million spots and float in them doctors dont have the answer). All of the Dr just test for my  kidney function , diabete and protein but never test the STD. I will ask them to test this out tomorrow.

I forgot to mention that I have never had a UTI when I notice more than normal sediment. My urologist also told me that people who do not cath also have sediment at times but because they go "normally" it isn't noticed but as soon as you get a catheter of any kind you tend to pay a lot of attention to what your urine looks like to make sure it isn't infected and then those of is with drain bags we really see it more because well our urine is sitting there in a clear bag.

Have you ever thought about leaving your catheter hooked up to a leg bag or a drain bag? I have a supra pubic catheter (an indwelling catheter surgically placed through the abdomen mine is below my belly button) I leave mine open at all times except if I am in the pool swimming or during my ballet class and I only get sediment if I am dehydrated or if my catheter isn't draining properly and leaves urine in the bladder and when I get it positioned just right it will drain what was left out but it is very very cloudy with sediment that looks like white bread that has been soaked in water way way way too long.  Maybe try hooking up to a drain bag of some kind and see if that helps lesson the amount of sediment you are experiencing.

Hey 38andMad, any update?  I have similar symptoms. Mine specifically will show up when I get oral sex and also when I sit for long periods of time. If I do several 12 hour work days in a row the last pee after work will be an opaque milky white and it will burn for and hour afterward.

I've had this for 15 years, with many urologists stumped. I've learned to deal with it and normally manage by avoiding oral sex, 12 hour days at work, and certain foods (bananas, milk, citrus). Anyways these are my own findings on my condition. Would like to hear back. Also, I'm married and neither my wife or past partners have ever complained about symptoms.

No wonder you are mad, that's appalling. The one thing I've found throughout life and trying to get the correct diagnosis of varying illnesses is nobody will listen and invariably you get the comment - who's the Dr here? - well do your flaming job properly! I'm so sorry you've had to suffer like this for all these years I agree with NurseTW, take it to a lawyer and see where you stand. As far as I can see it's medical negligence.Good luck with everything. Jue

PS - I posted above story because cloudy urine, and thick sediment that settels to bottom of urinal I use to monitor my symptoms is one of the symptoms of m. genitalium. Its ( for my condition) basically a diluted pus discharge, not thick enough to come out as a burning milk white discharge, that's how I know its back. My urine was very clear since azithromycin treatment, about 5-6 months ago, but I guess some of the organisims weren't killed and then multiplied back to a full blown infection again, I had it 22 years, well 23 now since it didn't actually get completley killed, it migrates to your bone joints closest to infection site. The pelvis, lower back and knees and causes chronic pain there, also who knows where else it could have spread to over more than two decades? In fact it was just this morning when I used my urinal ( a Gatorade bottle) I saw it was so cloudy I couldn't see through it and my heart sank. I thought I was soon going to start dating. I guess not. There is one other antibiotics I read about after getting a name for my STD that is used when azithromycin doesn't work, I'm going to insist on getting that one. Ive edgucated myself more about m. genitalium in the past 4-5 months than most urologists probably know about it. And not blogs but results published by professionals researching it specifically. M. Genitalium is the 3rd most common STD and the least known about by patients and apparantly doctors too. If you have sediment insist on testing for this as it is usually a symptom free STD for most people, they don't know they have it but its doing collatteral damage the longer you have it. If you don't want to be sterile and get the other permanent damage it can do MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE IT. INSIST. DONT WORRY ABOUT MAKING THE DOCTOR MAD, ITS THEIR JOB! IT SHOULD BE RULED OUT AT THE VERY LEAST. TRUST ME YOU DONT WANT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE IT A LONG TIME. IT DOES BAD THINGS TO YOUR BODY. MY EYES HAVE A PERMANENT SORT OF PINK EYE, ALWAYS ITCHY AND IRRITATED AND MANY BLACK SPOTS, 'FLOATERS' IN MY VISION. LIKE SNOW GLOBES MY EYES ARE, WITH BLACK SNOW. AND MY BACK HAS ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS BUT ITS BEEN HURTING BADLY FOR WEEKS NOW, AS WELL AS MY KNEES AND NOW WITH THE RETURN OF SEDIMENT AND CLOUDY URINE I KNOW WHY. I'm going back to my P.A. that found it at the end of 2012 today. I hope this helps some people out there. Look it up and compare symptoms, the short and long term ones and see if they fit you. I had an STD called mycoplasma genitalium. I had it for 22 years from 15 to age 38. Many doctors of all fields kept testing and saying I had nothing, though the persistent symptoms matched an STD perfectly and I got it after sex (symptoms) and was the only girl I had been with then (and since) so I KNEW it had to be an STD. this one and other mycoplasma and a few other STDs don't show on standard tests. It only shows on a microscopic look at a urine sample. And that test has been around, specifically developed for these hard to find STDs for at least 10 years but was NEVER given to me, m. genitalium is the second smallest organism known to science. If you don't want to have it forever insist on this test, or suffer as I did, there are numerous consequences of long term exposure. Chronic back and pelvis and knee joint pain, life long eye damage, permanent sterility and others. I have them all. All because all doctors I saw would not believe me and didn't go the extra mile to do more extensive testing, also all ive read since getting a name to the infection says a urologist should, as is supposedly standard, to treat with antibiotics when symptoms are persistent with no results from standard testing. And keep tyring differient ones because m. genitalium can only be killed by 2 antibiotics, and not the ones given for common STDs. This was never done either. It ruined my life, self esteem, the list goes on. I would not chance giving it to a woman even with condoms, didn't want anyone to go through what I was. It has made me a very lonley, depressed bitter person. Ive been alone since age 15 to now at age 38.  The only reason i got it cured, sort of, i think its back, and i havent been with a woman since cured, only found and treated becaude i went to doctor for a broken rib and while explaining current illnesses that they always ask about i told her my story, not expecting any treatment. Why would I after 22 years? She said she would get to the bottom of it and in 3 days called me and said she identified it and called in azithromycin prescription and that did it. 5 days of pills. An antibotic thats been around for decades. A urologist a year before told me i didnt have anything (I made a yearly trip to Dr.'s in hopes of being able to have a relationship sometime before I die) and thats supposed to be his expert field and a loley P.A. at a general practicioner found it in 3 days. I dont think i will ever stop being angry. INSIST ON MICROSCOPIC TESTING OR ANTIBOTICS ( AZITHROMYCIN) IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE AN STD EVEN IF YOUR TOLD YOU DONT. YOU HAVE THE SYMPTOMS. YOU ARE SUFFERING. DO WHAT YOU MUST TO GET PROPER TREATMENT.

Nothing is wrong. Your kidneys are filtering your lymph effectively, your body is removing mucus buildup. This happens when you fast long enough. I have the same problem, my Urologist gave me antibiotics. They didn't work. I've  been dealing with this daily for a year now and still don't know what's wrong. Very concerned.

I am suffering from the exact same thing. I cant see the doctor for another month or so. My pee is very misty and after a while will settle on the bottom forming a layer of white. I have gone to the Nephrologist and doctor many times and still have no idea whats wrong. Any hints or treatments? suggestions?

I should add that I have taken a liquid magnesium-calcium supplement daily for several years. Perhaps I should cut back on that and see if it's to blame.

Thank you for your reply (to my query about a white sediment in my urine). I am 62, married, not likely to have an STD. No chills, fever, or infection according to urinalysis. The sediment is very fine and white -- it really looks mineral rather than animal. It occurs, clears up almost immediately, then recurs in a few days. I will be seeing a urologist, but not for another three weeks. Any comments?

    Thanks for writing in. I think you are suffering from urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections can occur due bacterial infections, fungal infections, sexually transmitted diseases etc. Cloudy urine can occur due to urinary tract infections, proteinuria, kidney or ureteral stones, infections to the kidney and in renal failure.

Urinary tract infections cause burning sensation while passing urine, back pain, urethral discharge, fever, chills and blood in the urine. Diagnosis can be made by getting an urine examination done along with a urethral swab examination. What is your age? Testing for sexually transmitted diseases also need to be done.

Ultrasound will reveal if any abnormality present in the appearence of kidneys, urinary tract and also for the presence of  stones in them.

Consult your urologist immidiately.
