deep kidney pain

I am a healthy 53 year old male.  I jog, play golf (walk) , lift weights, etc.  No skeletal abnormalities that I am aware of. I too am having a deep pain in my left side kidney at night mainly when I lay on my back.  A sharp, dull stabbing like pain. No problems during the day when upright. No urinary issues either. Sometimes, hurts when move to my right side. This has now been ongoing for about 2-3 weeks.  A sharp, dull stabbing like pain. Have never had this pain before. What could be the problem? Urinary infection  or could this even be kidney cancer??

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. My ache is in my lower left side only, deep inside, lower back area just above the upper buttock region. Does not hurt when I am upright and walking or even jogging but when I sit and in particular lay down at night on my back. My right side does not hurt at all. Not a severe sharp pain typically associated with kidney stones but a dull, pulsing type pain. I am trying cranberry justice (100%) and even cranberry pills but only has temporarily relieved at night some. Hurting now (slight throbbing, dull pain) as I sit a and type this.  Could this be possibly liver or would radiate to the front? Going in Thursday for complete physical, so hopefully will find us more then with subsequent ultrasound done.

Hi,
There are 2 likely possibilities in your case. One, it could be a stone in the kidney which might be troubling you but usually the pain of the kidney stone usually worsens on walking or on movement. The other is a lumbar muscle strain and thus will suggest you to consult a urologist initially. You might need further investigations like an ultrasound or CT-IVU for the confirmation of the diagnosis. Once, that possibility is ruled out then only you should consult an orthopaedic surgeon. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
