mucus plugged indwelling catheter

My father has an indwelling catheter temporarily and it gets plugged with mucus, often times it takes him an hour to unplug the orifice of the catheter.  He had a neo-bladder placed due to bladder cancer 12 years ago and usually self caths but due to recent hip fracture now has the indwelling catheter.  Any suggestions on how to reduce the mucus formation/plugging would be appreciated.  Thanks.

When mine gets clogged the pain is intense. 2+ weeks since surgery. Foley to come out soon. Can I flush too often.Am I in danger using warm shower water? From dilaudI'd to morphine to percocet I have two left. My surgery was on another island and no refills w/out doc. Went to GP and will try codeine tonight.
