Dear Doctor,
Thank you so much for posting the answer to my urgent inquiry.
May I ask you one more question which would be crucial in deciding about my treatment plan.
Do you think that tygacil would be effective in eradicating the bacteria residing in the urinary tract. Normally, according to the information leaflet accompanying the medication it is destined for treating very difficult cases of abdominal infection although the bacteria killing proccess that it nicely initiates can relate to other cases e.g. such as mine.
The mechanism that this medication employs to kill the bacteria (overcoming the bacteries' pumps as well as reaching the bactieries' rybosome) makes it very unique and stand out in the group of IV medicine.
Hence this decision to use it in my case but your thoughts and insight would be much appreciated before I venture on this difficult path.
Looking forward to hearing your view on this:)
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Tygacil contains tigecycline which is a tetracycline antibiotic. It should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. The drug is given intravenously. However if multiple drugs are to be given then drugs like amphotericin B, amphotericin B lipid complex, diazepam, esomeprazole and omeprazole should not be given through the same I/V cannula.
The side effects of Tygacil are similar to tetracyclines and include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Other common side effects are those related to administration of injection like pain at injection site, swelling and irritation; increased or decreased heart rate and infections.
Mode of action of Tygacil is different than Imipenam and they cannot be compared but studies have shown that tigecycline is less efficacious than imipenem in the treatment of experimental pneumonia.
Hope that this information helps and hope that you will get better soon.
Wishing you good health.
