urinary catheterization
My son must be catheterized every four hours around the clock. His insurance is no longer covering betadine swabs. He has one fourth of one kidney. Is there an alternative to cleanse the area? OTC betadine is too expensive for us but I do now want to have my son get a bad infection which could be life threatening. Thanks
Hibiclens is another option we use at my job when patients are allergic to betadine. You might look into that. Hope that helps.

You can use surgical alcohol and Manuka Honey instead of Betadiene after consulting your son’s urologist. Both of them can be used as antiseptics.

I used to use alcohol as well as peroxide.
As much as I like the bethadine, I have experienced a difficult time in getting any.
Now I have a home care nurse who comes in every two months to change a suprapubic catheter for me. Now sterile 0.9 % Sodium Chloride is being used.
It must be working as I have not had many problems with UTI. The last time that I had a UTI would have been towards August of 2010.
Alcohol works well but does sting where there might be a break in the skin. When I had the catheter going through the penis instead, I had no irritation from the alcohol.
The area does not have to be absolutely sterile as long as the area is cleaned proir to placing the catheter. Here in Canada there is a limit to the amount of catheters that a person uses. I used to self cath at least 4 times a day, and due to that had to reuse some of the catheters. I used to clean them with normal soap and have them air dry.
The sodium Chloride works and does not have the stinging burning sensation that alcohol can have.
These so called insurance companies that are supposed to help in providing patients with needs are just like a legal form of crime. In my case they supply the catheters, no alcohol whipes and no lubrication to facilitate the passage of the catheters. I have been in situations where I had to use the catheters dry. It does work but I don't recommend it.
