I ordered wrong amount of vitamin d3 i think?

Hi everyone. My last blood test, my vitamin d was at 6. My doctor suggested taking vitamin d supplements for it as i asked about it. Didnt get into it too much because my real doctor was busy and got an appointment with his assistant who was more concerned with my white blood cells being high, and being in a hurry. With so much going on, he never explained what to do with vitamin d situation. I took it upon myself to order some vitamin d online because it was pretty expensive at local pharmacy. I found a deal online for buy one get one free, so i bought. Well, not knowing too much about it, they are for 5000iu of vitamin d. I looked that up before i started to take, and it seems like this is too much. Is 5000iu too much too take 1 a day if mine is at 6 right now? Kinda scared to take, after what i have read about taking too much. Is anyone else taking this much, or have taken this much? So hard to get call back from doctor, but just wanted to see if i could get a quicker answer because i want to get started. Im constantly fatigued, hurting, depressed, always tired. I am a 43 yr old male, and have type 2 diabetes. I am not overweight..(155lbs...5/8)...at least i dont think i am. But consistantly since high school have been 155-160lbs. Lately, my numbers have been way off for blood sugars...mainly high, and thinking it may have something to do with low d. Ok..sorry so long, but was wondering if these 5000iu were a safe place to start with mine being so low. Thank you very much for your time.

Vitamin D RDA was miscalculated. People should be taking closer to 10 000 IU daily.

5000 IU is definitely safe, however I maintain that its still half of what people need to take.

Also, since Vitamin D is far soluble, quantities will vary from person to person depending on their weight and size.
10 000 IU is the baseline... and for someone who might be heavier (in terms of weight), then 20 000 IU should be taken.

I have struggled the last 4 years trying to keep my Vit D levels in the normal ranges. So I am often prescribed Vit D supplements.  

I take one capsule of 50,000 IU one time weekly. I take mine on Tuesdays. That just happened to be the day I got my script filled. My Rheumy wanted me to take Vit D for 3 months. My last Vit D level (drawn on 12/12/16) was 12.

I took 10,000iu for a couple months to raise levels.

25-35iu per pound is suggested by many Vitamin D advocates. Magnesium is also needed. It balances to calcium uptake D will bring.

If you don't have health issues that prevent you from taking Vitamin K2 (MK4 form is best), then that's important to diecrt Calcium into the bones and away from arteries and soft tissue. If you can't take it, you can eat dark leafy greens.

I was given the following information by a functional medicine Dr.:

In the summer- For most people the daily supplemental D dose will be 1-5000IU per day

In the winter-  most would need 5-7000IU per day

Since my D3 was at 26, the Dr. recommended the following:

10-15,000IU per day for 2-3 weeks to try to get my level back above 50 more rapidly. Then have my levels checked in 4-6 weeks to be sure it is above 60.

I did a liquid D3 and I found that was easier to take.
