vitamin D and brain fog?

Hello,
I am a male, 28 yrs old. I started medications for hypertension (amlodipine) and high cholesterol (crestor) in Dec 2013. After seven months on these I developed weird symptoms. I have been suffering from fogginess for the past 9 months. It's a fuzzy feeling in my brain and eyes. I also used to be very fatigued at times to a point where I could barely stand. Apart from this I have gastritis and heartburn though it has got better recently. I also suffered from unexpected weight loss. However currently my weight is more steady. I had all sorts of medical tests done on me. Only  recently I was diagnosed with low vitamin D levels (less than 4.2) and low normal vitamin B12. I have stopped my medications for the past two months. However even though other symptoms seems to be getting better my fogginess has been lingering on. Has anybody else got similar experiences?

Your D3 is severely deficient. I was at 19ng/mL in September and will retest my blood in a few weeks.

You may be taking D2. That is bad. You need D3 and taken daily, not weekly or monthly.

US lab range is 30-100ng/mL. You need to be above 50ng/mL. Anything below should be considered deficient.

D and magnesium deficiency can cause depression, fatigue, anxiety, pain, brain fog, headache, eye sensitivity, etc.

You need Vitamin D3 supplements, magnesium and Vitamin K2 (as long as you aren't taking medications that would conflict with K2).

You could start at 5,000iu D3 daily for a few days to see how you feel, then work your way up to 10,000iu daily. Even when you get to corrected levels, you need to supplement daily. D3 does not stay in your body.

5,000iu is more like anaintenence dose. You must retest your blood after 3 months to see where your levels are at.

The only blood test that can diagnose vitamin D deficiency is a 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25 OH vitamin D). Unfortunately, some doctors are still ordering the wrong test, 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D.

Magnesium is essential, you need to take it with your D3. Take D3 with some sort of fat (like coconut oil, avocado, peanut butter, etc.  it helps D3 & K2 absorb). Take D3 in morning or afternoon. Not at night. It may keep you up.

B12 should be 800

I've been on a "good day" streak for a few weeks now. This past weekend I started feeling a little off, and this whole week i've been tired and dizzy. Not as bad as it was in the past, but still ***** that these symptoms come and go.
A few weeks back I had a headache almost every night, and it started out in the back of my head too. The headaches are gone now, I switched around my vitamin regimen a little bit, and that seemed to help the headaches, but now, I think that change is whats making me feel crummy again. Stopped the headaches, started the lightheadedness and brain fog. I just can't win. Plus to add to that... I have been having stomach issues lately, heartburn, a little queasiness, and just random aches. Can't seem to get the balance right.
8 months of "getting better" I just hope it doesn't start up again. Taking about 8000iu daily of D3, plus an array of other Vitamins. Need to get my levels checked again. Oh, and I recently got an EKG and chest xray to check my heart and lungs (short of breathe, heart palpitations and chest pains...) all was perfectly now.
I still always question wether or not everything my body is doing to me is vitamin D related. I can't seem to be convinced, just worried. Constantly.

Hopefully you're doing well. Its a long road to "normal" unfortunately, but we will get there some day!

Hi Welshy and Aggie,

After a course of 50000 iu once for 8 weeks, I have been on 2000 iu daily now for about a month. I have both good and bad days. Recently I had two weeks when I felt I had totally recovered and gone back to normal, but again I have been suffering like hell now and feeling off. I also have tingling headache at the back of my head most of the time. I have noticed that any sort of stress and anxiety sort of triggers my symptoms. I would have a blood test done soon to get my values rechecked. Please keep me updated on how you guys are doing and how you are dealing with the problems.

I've been doing pretty well the past couple weeks, but today is a different story. My anxiety started up this morning, heart palpitations, chest tightness, short of breath... it *****. I think I need to get a chest xray. None of this was ever an issue until the Deficiency started. Hopefully its JUST anxiety, but its been coming and going for months now, and I need to make sure no damage has been done.

Symptoms will come and go. 7 months now for me (the first 4 were a bust because my doctor didn't help AT ALL.) Now I have more good days than bad, but bad days do happen here and there. Don't worry. It takes time. I know.

After a rather good three weeks, the symptoms are back again. Fuzziness in the eyes, tingling sensation at the back of my head and extreme fatigue. My doctor has asked for blood tests to recheck my values. I am really confused as to what's going on. How are you doing now by the way?

I'm feeling much better than I was last week. I think I finally have a good balance of vitamins, and I'm starting to feel the difference in my energy level. I think the new Magnesium vitamin, and upping my D intake is really all I needed since the start of this all. I'm glad you are feeling better!!

I have been on 50000IU of vitamin D per week for 6 weeks now along with a daily multivitamin supplement. For the last 2 weeks I have felt really better. Earlier I had symptoms everyday for 9 months. Right now I am having good days. My symptoms are milder. My energy level has also really improved and I feel 100 times better. I guess it would still take a lot of time for me to recover completely. By the way, how are you feeling now?

I've been in treatment for 6 months now and the fogginess comes and goes. I'm feeling a trillion times better, but it took months for me to start having more good days than bad. Make sure your b12 is methylcobalamin. It's better absorbed and most generic b12 has traces of cyanide in it! I hope things get better soon!
