Your D3 level needs to be above 50ng/mL
US lab ranges are too low. 50-70 is optimal.
You do need to add magnesium daily also.
You're taking 4,000iu. You might want to go up to at least 7,000iu daily to get your levels higher
I too had a vitamin D of 12 ng/mL (30 nmol/L) but I live in Queensland Australia and have a tan. At the time I had severe magnesium deficiency (most important co factor for vitamin D absorption - and my reason for vitamin D resistance aka not able to increase my vitamin D levels) and untreated Hashimoto's thyroiditis (most people with this autoimmune disease has vitamin D deficiency although vitamin D deficiency is more common with autoimmune diseases in general).
I go by symptoms which is my most accurate sign. I can tell very quickly when I need more magnesium and symptoms can show up overnight due to anything from eating too much sugar to stress. I believe the best test for magnesium is ionized magnesium followed by RBC (red blood cell) magnesium. The best way to see if you need magnesium is to supplement and see if your symptoms improve.
I was a 12 on the vitamin D level test. I am a redhead and did not spend a lot of time in the sun plus I live in the North. I also have fibro and I did not know I was so low on vitamin D. I am feeling so much better now. I got the drops of vitamin D off of Amazon ( bio d forte by Biotics Research) I also got the D ribose powder and magnesium powder (by Bulk Supplements on Amazon). The drops of D are 2000 mg a drop. Not bad, I just drop them on some yogurt ,food, or on my tongue. The powder is not bad either. The magnesium does not dissolve as well as the ribose and is a little gritty but worth it. It has really helped me. I have been doing this a few months and I just hope it continues to help in the future!
45ng/ml. How to accurately check mg level if serum is inaccurate? Ty sir/mam
Magnesium serum is inaccurate because most of the magnesium is in your cells not your blood. The upper tolerable limit for vitamin D is listed at 4000 IU daily. You would have to check your vitamin D levels to see if you are in optimal range which is 40 - 60 ng/mL (100 - 150 nmol/L).
My mg level is normal. Is my vit d level enough? I'm taking 4000 iu per day.
Vitamin D can bring out or worsen an existing magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency can cause a long list of symptoms including cramps, excessive thirst and excessive urination. Make sure you take magnesium with your vitamin D.
