Magnesium allergy/suggestions to get it?

I started to take magnesium supplements because  of chronic migraine. I noticed good changes a couple of weeks later: my skin and hair condition improved, I slept better and my hands were way warmer!!! (overall my body temperature), like never before. My migraines were getting a little better...however I started to get hives and some sneezing...

I tried Chelated then stopped. Than I tried Glycinate, again hives I stopped. Then I tried powder which seemed more pure, but it just took longer before they started to appear again.

I had been doing changes to my diet following the advised of my nutritionist, I was skipping a lot of meals and not eating enough protein and carbs.

I am also at 14 with Vitamin D, I am taking a supplement, I have to retest in two more months. I am not allergic to vitamin D because I have not been taking magnesium and I have no hives.

My nutritionist said that as I eat more I would get my magnesium, but I was reading online that a great amount of food had to be eaten in order to achieved the minimum recommended which is 400mg per day. I would be happy with 200 mg per day.

I already got Brazil nuts, brown rice and spinach, but it will not be enough.

Is there any other way I can get this mineral without getting the hives? maybe are the fillers? something in the powder? maybe I do not need it at all and I am overdoing it? but I did not get diarrhea...

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot

My Wife has a severe mag deficiency from 3 abdominal surgeries. She gets severe muscle cramps all over which can only be stopped with Ativan, then pain killers like Dilaudid or Demerol. She used to take Quinine which worked well until it was banned from Rx for anything but malaria, but we have read that quinine itself causes magnesium loss.
Oral mag in just about all forms doesn't work well for Her due to bowel problems, so She has been getting IV treatment weekly for the past year for magnesium replacement at 5grams per session. Blood levels fluctuate between 1.5-2.0 even two days after infusions but at least the infusions keep Her out of the hospital. She has also started taking the nano-ionic drops with mixed results. We're hoping that this will work.
As for Vitamin D, You need D-3 which You can purchase on Amazon in 50,000unit capsules for about $20 per 100 caps. Her vit D levels went from 17 to 50 after several months of this, on a twice weekly basis.

Hi,

I'm one of the rare people with the same problem. I suffer from chronic migraines for 8 years. Magnesium cures the headaches but causes hives and uncontrollable acne. Every form including transdermal through my body skin causes the acne. I noticed, however, that it makes my face oily and seems to feed the acne bacteria. I read that some people put Milk of Magnesia (original) on their face like a mask. Cleanse-rinse then the Milk o Mag on the face. Can wait for a while till it dries and rinse off. I do it every 3-4 hours. It helps my headaches somewhat and it does not make my acne worse - maybe better since it dries out the skin. We should keep in touch. This issue is ruining my work and social life. I think it originated from long term antibiotic use (azythromicin) which depletes magnesium. May have caused leaky gut - not sure. Best of luck!!!

Thanks. I think I will have to give it a try to the oil one. The liquid one gave a lot of hives and last night I could not sleep AT ALL. I am sure it was a little too much for me. I will try half of the dose tomorrow and see how it goes. That stuff is powerful.

I will read the article...sounds interesting. Thanks!!

The transdermal oil does work. I like to especially use it directly on my muscle spasms.  I take magnesium supplements on and off too. I don't take magnesium daily as my kidneys are not up to scratch. Something i found out the very hard way unfortunately. *sigh* I'm a special case. :P

I'm not sure if you have read this article but it's interesting. From Stop The Thyroid Madness: "My discovery of why our MAGNESIUM levels are a huge problem! (mine was)"

Hi and thanks again.

Yeap I looked through the Ancient Minerals magnesium...I read some where that is not as effective as the pills (another brand of oil though) is it working for you?

I went to my local vitamin shoppe and they do not carry any oil. Online they have another two brands. Since I was already in the store I bought a liquid one, an ionic magnesium. I was reluctant in the beginning because I do not all that ionic thing they put there.

I tried it this afternoon, half of the dose, 2ml, which is 200mg, in water. It tastes horrible... I got some hives,  but I will try it tomorrow again, maybe I need only 100mg per day...I am thinking.

If it does not work I will look for the Ancient Minerals oil or lotion as my last alternative...

Good idea that sub bilingual, Apparently that liquid and oil versions are a more pure form of magnesium and vitamins. Thanks!!

Okay i found the absorption rates of delivery systems. I love my B12 sublingual spray. Lucky i can find this although it was a hassle to get it into my local pharmacy. As i have autoimmune pernicious anaemia, it was a hassle i was prepared to go through. :)

Delivery System / Rate of Absorption*
Pill or tablet - 10%
Capsule - 20%
Gel Cap - 30%
Transdermal Patch - 45%
Sublingual Liquid - 50%
Intramuscular Injection - 90%
Intraoral or Sublingual Spray - 95%
Intravenous Injection - 100%

Hi again. Glad to see the magnesium is helping.  There is transdermal (through the skin) magnesium. Not sure how this will go if you develop hives easily. You could try testing before buying.

I bought Ancient Minerals transdermal (through the skin) oil at my local health food store. I found it stings a bit sometimes so i splash a bit of water onto the area and it's fine.  The Ancient Minerals  "Transdermal Magnesium Therapy" and "Magnesium Application and Use" articles are very informative.

There is also sublingual (under the tongue) spray.  The US company Vitamist has a minerals spray containing magnesium. Mag-I-Cal website lists Nano-Ionic Magnesium Sublingual Spray with Vitamin C.
