Ghee and Garlic (Ask the expert)

Hi there Dr. Beckerman,
I am so glad I finally found a Dr., who is as knowledgeable about leading a healthy lifestyle without too much meds, as you are.  Having said that, my mother, who is about 70 years old has recently been diagnosed with having a blockage in one of the arteries of her heart.  She is already taking Lipitor 10 mg for high LDL cholesterol and Lisinopril 10 mg to regulate her blood pressure.  Her Dr. recently gave her Ecotrin 81 mg.  I've been doing some research on my own and found that Ghee and Garlic are both very effective for lowering bad cholesterol and for the overall heart health.  I also read about a very effective recipe which  improves poor blood circulation and naturally dissolves blood clots.  It increases antioxidant protection in our body, helps with the dilation of arteries, strengthens the immune system  and helps the heart to function normally
The Recipe:
1/2 teaspoon of Carom Seed Powder (Caraway Seed)
1/2 teaspoon of unrefined sugarcane sugar – in block form
1-2 cloves of Garlic (crushed or powdered)
1/2 teaspoon of Ghee
Mix all this ingredients into a paste and swallow it.
Within 15-20 minutes the heart rate will go up (80bpm) to Normal.

I know that this is a pretty good recipe for a healthy person to take Daily who is not on any meds; but I wanted to ask you if you could advise me whether or not it's also good for someone who is taking the above meds.  Thanks Much,

If we're talking about the same Ghee, I'm having second thoughts about this recipe.  As you may know, ghee is clarified butter, a common ingredient in many South Asian recipes.  Because of it's fat content, it's not a particularly heart-healthy choice - I would tend to avoid it, particularly if your mom has heart disease.  Take care!

Thanks for the quick response, Doc.  Yup...that's what I thought, Ghee has high fat content; and therefore not good for people with heart disease.  How about garlic?  Would you recommend taking it simultaneously with the medications that she's on?

Other than that, what foods do you suggest for people with a blockage in their arteries?

Take care,
