On June 9 I posted my problems with Topamax and Phentermine, drugs I was taking for weight loss. I was taken off both drugs. I weighed in last week (down 43 lbs to date) and I have now been placed back on Phentemine alone. I tried 1/2 pill, but had too many heart palpitations for my liking (my doctor seemed to think they were ok), so I got permission to reduce the pill to 1/4. That amount curbs my appetite and has caused no palpitations. Now I know for sure that TOPAMAX is what caused my erratic EKG, sweating, dizziness, neasea and by unexplained exhaustion.

I was 100 lbs overweight but in good health when it came to all my testing...heart, lungs, blood pressure, mood, cholesterol, etc. I took Topamax (1 pill) with phentermine (1/2) on a physican's diet plan. I lost 38 lbs in 3 months (11 lbs more than the average person on the medical diet plan) and I felt great! Then one day I did my usual 3-mile walk and couldn't finish it; I was sweating, dizzy and lethargic. The next morning I felt good and went on my walk again. I had to stop it after 2 miles and felt horrible....sweating, dizziness, nausea, lethargic, fast heatbeat, etc. I drove my self to the doctor hours later. My blood pressure was high for the 1st time in my life and the EKG showed a very irregular and "intense" heartheat. My dotor didn't think it was the drugs (I was born w/ an irregular heartbeat and my father had a heartattack from the same at age 60). He told me not to walk for awhile and he called me twice at home to check on me, even over the weekend (so I knew I had a right to be frightened). I didn't walk, but I stayed bad. It became difficult to walk around the house due to the symptoms I mentioned above. I ended up cutting down on the drugs myself (I cut the Topamax in half but kept the same dose of Phenterine). I started feeling better (but not fine) the next day. After two days of feeling better (still not 100%) I called the doctor. He told me to stop BOTH drugs immediately. Within 3 days I was back to feeling 100% fine. I haven't had any of the above symptoms since, even though I am back to walking 3 miles every other day. I have gained a few pounds (feeling straved) which is depressing, but I see the doctor tomorrow for my monthly visit to see where we go from here. According to my doctor, I am the only patient in his large diet plan who had negative reactions to the drugs after being on them for such a long time (if the drugs were indeed responsible...he's STILL not sure, but I am). All his other patients (if they had trouble w/ the drug or drugs) had problems at the beginning of their usage. PLEASE BE CAREFUL if you are taking Topamax and/or Phentermine. LISTEN to your body. YOU Know more than your doctor does when it comes to your symptoms! I would rather be around (obese) for my children for another 40 years than dead from taking dangerous drugs!

Just started Topamax last night my Dr. perscribed it for weight loss. I'm 100lbs over weight. I feel a little goofy as it were, and i am having a little bit of trouble with articulation, and consentration but that's it.  I scared myself so bad last night I wasn't going to take the pill at all, i'm glad I did so far hope things don't get worse!  I haven't eaten that much, im not hungry at all which is the goal. I'm forcing down a slim fast for nutrients :)

Hi,

I weighed 120 pounds when I got married. 15 years and 2 kids later I was at 256 pounds at 5'5" so I know how it feels.  I had tried Atkins and lost about 50 pounds but I gained it all back.  I went so long without even trying to lose because it seemed like so much weight there wasn't even any point in starting. My husband, being the wonderful man he is, never said a word. I guess he thought he was being supportive of me in all shapes and sizes, I almost wish he would've said something so maybe I would've took off the feed bucket before I completely blew up!  Finally when my feet starting hurting all the time and I couldn't walk to the mailbox without feeling like I was going to fall over, something had to give.

I went to a doctor whose ad I just happen to run across in the newspaper. The first visit he talked about reading labels and how to accuratly caculate what your eating. Did you know there are 900 fat calories in one large order of fries alone?! He perscribed phentermine, Topamax, and the HCG shots.  He gave me the option of all 3 or just the ones I wanted, but I want rid of this burden so load me up! I figure I can always eliminate them if they don't work out.

The phentermine completly kills my appetite.  I'm on an "off" month right now to let my body rest from it(doctor's orders).  It's alittle harder to curb the urge to snack, but after 3 months of training your stomach not to get hungry, it's not too bad.

The Topamax makes soft drinks your worst enemy!  I didn't believe it when they told me that it would, but it's true.  They taste HORRIBLE!  As a matter of fact, all sweet things are alot less appealing.  It is a lower mg. than is perscribed for people with migrains, but can still have some adverse side effects I think mild depression is one of them listed.  Luckily, I've not had any.

My doctor said there is no scientific study that once-and-for-all proves that the shots work, but some people swear by them and he offers them because so many people have asked for them and he has seen results.  He said he doesn't know if it's just the fact that anyone willing to give themselves a shot twice a week is naturally going to stay more motivated in the other areas of their diet. It's working for me though, so I'm not messing with a good thing!  I'm just starting my 4th month and am down 30 pounds.  I went grocery shopping the other day and tried to pick up three 10 pound bags off potatoes at once.  I can't believe I was carrying that much around all the time.  I can't believe I'm still carrying about twelve 10 pound bags around!

I know some people don't like the thought of taking medication but when you are beginning to be able to relate to the statement, "I'd rather be dead than fat", medication doesn't seem do bad. I've still go so much to go, my goal is 150 pounds, I know I've not won the battle yet,  but it's amazing how much better I feel already I can't wait to see where it goes from here! I wish I could've done it without medical intervention, but I just got tired of the struggle.  It's still not easy, but it's easier.  Keep me posted on how you're doing!

I have 150lbs to lose and I need some advice.  I know Adkins worked for me...but I just could not stick to it.  I heard someone talking about the weight loss injections, and I was very interested in knowing more.  Has anyone out there got any success stories to inspire me, and does this stuff really work?  I have already wasted so much $$$ on yoyo diets.  I am still young and my weight has really affected my quality of life.  I have made up my mind and it is time to do something about my weight.  Any suggestions or advice would be very helpful.

Thanks

Hi,

I've been taking Topamax for weightloss for about 3 monts.  The only side effects I've experienced have been the tingling in my fingers and toes, ususally first thing in the morning.  I've had no sexual side effects as "slay" has mentioned.  I'm down 30 pounds, so if anything, it's improved!

I took topamax for 2 months and lost 35 lbs! In fact, it turned me into an anorexic. I was eating no more than 600 calories a day.  NOT a safe way to lose weight. Plus, I was taking it for bipolar disorder and it didn't help with that at all.

But if you are a complusive/emotional eater it does stop the urge to eat and that happened within a few days. It made all soda taste flat and I couldn't feel a damn thing during sex so the cons out weighed the pros..
