Welcome everyone... I'm happy to see that there are others in my age group out there with similar issues.  While all age groups have weight problems, I sometimes feel overrun by teenagers getting ready to go to the prom next week!!

Now that we know there's a bunch of us here, let's see what we all have in common.

I was always very small - I'm only 5' tall and until my thyroid stopped working properly, the most I ever weighed was 120 when I was pregnant.  When I was in my late 30's, all of a sudden I gained about 15 pounds (from 95 to 110), for no reason, then a couple years later, I lost it for no reason. This happened twice more, before my thyroid finally just stopped working completely when I was 57 yrs old and I put on 30 lbs in 3 months, in spite of a physically demanding job, calorie restriction, etc.  I've since developed insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome and gained an additional 20 pounds, in spite of a strict diet, tracking calories, exercise, etc.

I have a history of fluid retention, which causes my weight to fluctuate as much as 5-7 pounds over the course of a day, which in itself can be very frustrating.

I center my meals around vegetables and high quality protein, including all types of meat and dairy.  Because of insulin resistance, I limit sugar and simple carbs, opting for limited amounts of whole grains instead. My diet is limited to 1200 calories/day but I usually don't eat that much.

I walk at least 3 days/week for approximately an hour and I have other exercises, prescribed by my doctor that I do on the other days, along with yard work, etc.

I have recently stated taking off a few pounds, so I'm keep my fingers crossed that the downward trend continues.

Brief apology for my typing errors above. I am doing this on a touch screen tablet, so all errors are due to physical mistake, rather than a lack of appreciation for proper grammar, punctuation, or spelling.  :)

Hi. 5'10" Gent, and brand spankin newbie to this site. i just turned 56 in April.  In my journal August. 12, 2013, I recorded wgt. 247.5 lb, BP 157/101, severe depression & anxiety with heaart palpitations and mid-nightime panic attacks. Also using CPAP setting of 14cm for severe sleep apnea, and suffered almost daily migraines. Plus my triglicerides were, as my dr put it, "through the roof!" I could not some days it was all I could do to get out of bed, let alone actually exercise.

Today, June 11, 2014, I recorded weight 214 lb, and my BP during last week Dr checkup. Was 109/89!  my depression and anxiety are under control, and my cholesterols are all "right where ythey shoulld be," and  I am now near or on the lowest possible dosages for all of my meds, including those for depression and anxiety. Dr is hopeful that with additional weight loss I may be able to reduce CPAP to a much lower pressure (although will still need some due to deviated septum and loose tissue in the esophagus).  I also now have a morning routine of up at 05:00, followerd by 20-30 minutes of stretching, Qi Gong, and positive affirmations. ( I allow myself to wake without an alarm on the weekend, but still perform myndaily rituals). I had originallybset a goal of 30 consecutive days. Today was day # 31, so next milestone is 60 days. Oh, and last week I started following my morning ritual, on Mon, Wed, &Fri, with a 40 minute walk around the inside perimeter of a nearby shopping mall.

What have I done to accomplish all of this, besides being religious about taking my meds as prescribed,?
In approximate chronological order:
- began taking a once daily vitamin & mineral suppliment for men over 50
- started therapy counseling
- cut 100% of beef and pork from diet
- eliminated 99% of dairy ( I still allow myself the rare occassion of egg whites orn goats milk yogurt)
- switched from 100% caffienated coffee to 50% decaf ( I drink between 2 & 4 cups (5 oz ea.) daily
- began actually meaasuring my flavored non-dairy coffee creamer ( I call it my coffe-crack because its so addictive!) so I am sure to limit myself to a single 1-Tbsp serving per cup
- limit my fish and chicken to an absolute maximum of 30% total dieatary intake. (desired goal is to eventually become 100% vegetarian)
- began recoring daily stats (weight, exercises) along with thoughts, questions, concwrns, ataboys, etc in a journal
- started a separate food joiurnal, wherw I log water consumption and all dietary intake ( to encourage honesty, I strive to refrain from all emotional judgements. The importance lies in being able to look back at historical trends in diet, exercise, weight, and attitude, and their corelations.)
- began morning ritual
- began walking

Since my Dr want me to get a minimum of 150 minutes/week of exercise, and my trice weekluy walks only add up to 120 minutes, I am looking for additional exercises that I can do on Tues, Thurs, and maybe Sat, hat target other muscle groups, such as aerms, and thorax, while adding another 30-40 minuytes to the weekly total.

I am open to considering all suggestions, provided tjey meet thw following constraints.

First and foremost, their can be absolutely no financial cost required. (I have been unemplouyed far more than employed sincwe April, 2009, and have only recently regained enough self xconfidence to start talking the occassipnal freelance job while applying to more "traditional" jobs.)

Second, they need to be able to be done within the home. I live in an urban setting, with a freeway overlooking my back yard. So the air quality suxcks, to put it bluntly. Combine that with the beginning of the monsson season ( I live in in the southwestern US, in the Sonoran Desert ) and you xan understand why I don't want to exercise outside.

Finally, they ideally with be low impaxct at the beginning, bit able to grow in challenge as I buold strenght and stamina.

So if anyone has any exercises that have worked for them, and meet the criteria above, I love to hear from you.

As I learn how to use all of the bells and whistles on this site, and in it's companion mobile app, I look forwars to sharing in your successes as you sharw in mine. I truly believe that we can all succeed, especially with mutual support. The very fact we're here shows the desires are there, along with the willingness to act on them.  :)
