Sunday Weigh In May 3, 2020

Good morning... how is everyone doing today?  I hope you're still weathering the stay at home situation, if your area is still doing that.

My state is beginning to open up a little bit - they say they're going to do it in stages and I'm hoping that people don't start getting sick again.  So far, they've reopened some beaches and are starting to reopen some businesses, though social distancing is still required and masks are recommended when in public settings.  Restaurants are allowed to open for inside seating at 25% capacity and some businesses can open with the same guideline.  Hair/nail salons, gyms, bars/nightclubs must remain closed for the time being and gatherings are still limited to 10 or less and elderly/vulnerable are encouraged to continue to shelter in place.  Although churches were never shut down, here, they've been encouraged to hold online or outdoor services.  Schools will remain closed for the remainder of this school year.  It will be a while before attractions, such as Disney, Universal, etc will be able to open and I would think that when they do, there will be restrictions as to how many can be allowed into the parks each day.

Some cities placed stricter restrictions on residents and not all of them have expired, so things are different from one city/county to another, which makes it sort of difficult to know what you can/can't do.

Elective surgeries are being allowed again, so I'm hoping I can get my cataract surgery taken care of soon, although my husband seems to think maybe I should wait a while...

Anyway, we're still doing well and continue to work on a variety of projects here at home.  Prior to the stay at home order, we had purchased new flooring for one of our bathrooms but hadn't put it down yet... We've done that and it turned out really well.  I continue to practice my calligraphy and am working on getting our spare bedroom set up as a "studio" so I don't have to have my supplies all over the house.

I saw a new endocrinologist this past week and although I wasn't impressed with much of the visit, he did change my thyroid medication from synthetic hormones to a desiccated brand and I'm beginning to see some improvements in the way I feel.  The very first thing I noticed was that the swelling went down considerably in my ankles - what a difference to actually "see" that I have ankle bones again.  My fingers still swell, but I think that's from arthritis.  My peripheral neuropathy has gotten better, even though my neurologist had me wean completely off the medication I've been using for several years and I hadn't even attributed my neuropathy to being thyroid related.
I'm really happy with the way it's working and hope that other symptoms that my doctors have said are not thyroid related (even though they show up on most lists of hypothyroid symptoms) will begin improving, including the ability to lose weight.

Speaking of weight - it seems to have stabilized a little bit.  Instead of fluctuating by 4-5 lbs/day, it's only fluctuating by 1-2 lbs/day, so I see that as great improvement.  I haven't been recording my weight on a daily basis because it's so erratic, but I've lost 1.2 lbs in the past week.  I'm sure that's from loss of fluid since I haven't changed my eating or exercise habits.  It makes me hopeful that once I do begin exercising again (now that I actually have energy to do it), I'll be able to lose some, rather than simply beating my head against a brick wall.

So - that's me.  How are things going for y'all?  I hope you're all doing well and are having success with your efforts to lose weight, be fit and live healthy.

~~Wishing everyone a successful week~~

Gosh, that's great news about the new doctor giving you a more intelligent prescription. I hope it keeps working and you get things more stabilized. You sure had gone through a string of jerk doctors and deserve someone to take you seriously.

Things are about the same here, with the one negatively exciting event being that I took my son for his allergy shot. I sure did not want to go to a medical building of any kind, but if he gets an asthma attack he might wind up in the hospital anyway, so we went. We masked and gloved and wore big coats, which we took off when we got back to the car. It was no fun to be met at the door with nurses saying "Are you here for allergy shots or for Covid-19 testing?" Why on earth would people with such different needs and levels of contagion be anywhere near each other?!?!!

Our HMO opened allergy bookings on the 20th, and to keep my son at his "maintenance" level, only needing shots every 6 weeks, we needed him to get an appointment by the 28th. I called one day after they opened bookings, the best they could give me was May 1. (That meant he had to go down from ".5" level of shots to a ".4" level, and he'll need to go in every four weeks, instead of being able to stay at the .5 level and go in only every 6 weeks. And then when the crisis is over, they will build him back up to a ".5" bottle by having him come in once a week for several weeks. It's annoying to have missed the ".5" level by only two days because they couldn't get him in, but once every 4 weeks is better than once 1 week.)

Anyway, it was nerve-wracking to go. My husband and I are both in a higher-risk category, and have been trying pretty assiduously in all ways not to do anything that might increase our son's chance of becoming an orphan. I don't know for sure if we'll do the allergy shots again, we might stop them altogether and just rely on Albuterol and begin him again at the ".1" level when the crisis is over.  I didn't ask his cousin to take him (who has volunteered) because though he's in his 20's, I don't know how I could ever face my sister if her son got Covid-19 because he took my son for an allergy shot. Will have to face this decision in 4 weeks; it's a new decision each time. :P

I finally got our good scale from the new house and got a Sunday-morning weight. I'm exactly (all the way to the tenth of a pound) where I was last time I weighed. This is pretty good because I've been eating very freely. If I can remember that this shutdown is going to be for a long time yet and is not a vacation from sensible dieting, I might be able to knock down a few tenths of a pound by next week. :)

Take care, stay away from crowds (especially in medical buildings), wash hands.

It is good that I got on a different medication that has more potential to help me, but my new endocrinologist didn't exactly take me seriously since he denied every one of my symptoms being thyroid related, even though they all appear on every list of thyroid symptoms I've ever seen.  His favorite comment was: "you can't prove these caused by thyroid".  I didn't actually say it, but my thought was "no, I can't prove they're related to thyroid, but you can't prove they *aren't* related to thyroid, either..."  Since he was so adamant that my symptoms are not thyroid related, he will, most likely, deny that the medication has had any positive effect.

Since his testing protocol only includes TSH, and not actual thyroid hormones, I do expect him to lower my dosage once he sees that my TSH isn't going to come out of the basement - i.e. return to "normal" range.  At that point, I'll have to make some decisions as to whether I'm going to stick with him or not.

I'm really sorry to hear that you missed the deadline for your son's allergy shot by only 2 days and that he must go back to a more frequent shot schedule.  I understand why you would hesitate to ask your nephew to take him.

It is odd that the facility would have those coming for asthma shots in such close proximity to those coming for COVID-19 tests.  You'd think there should be an effect way to separate them.  It does sound like you took great precautions though.  Hopefully, by the time the next shot rolls around, things will have changed and the danger reduced.

Wow - you've done well, staying at the same weight all this time.   Although my state is opening things up, I'm not sure it's safe yet, so we are still planning to stay close to home and go out only for necessary things, so thanks for the reminder that I need to become more diligent about my food intake as well.  :-)

Have a good week.
