This is why I only weigh in once a week because weighing in every day will drive you crazy. You have to realize you're not going to consitently lose or even maintain your weight on a daily basis. It's pretty much impossible. As others said, hormone fluctuations, lack of bowel movements as well as eating too much sodium and retaining water will show a gain in the scale. The scale is not the most accurate measure of your progress anyway. It's merely a tool to help you keep an eye on your overall progress. 1lb is nothing to be alarmed over. Really anything could have showed a 1lb gain, it's nothing to freak out over. I weighed in yesterday even though I knew I shouldnt have and it showed I gained 1 lb from my last weigh in. And today I got my period so the 1 lb weight gain is not 1 lb of fat, but at least 1 lb of water retention.
And don't be afraid to eat. It's very easy to become unhealthily obsessed with losing weight when you get too wrapped up in it. I was for a while, but weight loss is a process and all that matters is your overall change in the big picture. Don't focus too much on the day to day changes because every day will vary.
Something that might calm your nerves is a little math. Approximately 3500 calories = 1 lb. That would mean you would have had to consume 3500 calories more than what you burn on a daily basis to gain 1 lb of fat. I'm not sure whether or not you've been exercising, but even if you havent been, you still burn a considerable amount of calories. Do you know what your BMR number is? If you don't, BMR stands for your Basal Metabolic Rate. Depending on your height, weight, gender and age your body burns a bunch of calories just living and breathing. For example mine is 1491. That means even if I were to stay in bed all day long and not move, my body would still burn 1491 calories just living. And that doesnt even take into consideration how many additional calories are burned doing regular every day activities (showering, brushing teeth, walking, doing laundry, cooking, grocery shopping etc) And then if you exercise you're burning an additional however many hundred calories on top of that. The taller and more you weigh, the higher your BMR will be. If you want to see yours here's the link to the calculator. Seeing the number for yourself might put you at ease a bit. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ As you can see, gaining 1 lb of fat would be pretty difficult if you've been watching what you eat. And you can assure yourself, that's not going to happen overnight.
Weight fluctuations are normal and we all must learn to not let those little ups here and there frighten us or derail our weight loss efforts. msniki412 and Got_To_Do_It know that and, whether you weight daily or weekly, it is important to be concerned only if the scale continues to climb. Even then, it only triggers us to reassess "what" we are doing and change our plan. That is when you come back to the community and the members will help guide you in readjusting your food, calories and/or exercise.
We do ourselves a Huge Favor when we realize look at this as a journey .. and just like the road on a journey goes up and and down and makes the view more spectacular .. the ups and downs we face in our weight loss journey helps prepare us for life and long-term success.
As Got_To_Do_It said ... "eat sensibly - exercise regularly and the weight will move" ... or you can come to Iowa and shovel snow .. lolll ... (just kidding). Hope you're getting warmer weather than we are.
(((Hugs)))
I weight daily - always have but it is not uncommon for me to put on 1 or 2lb one day and lose it again over the next couple of days - hormones and changes on teh body can cause fluid retention - bowel activity or lack of it can change weight - muscle growth can change weight - it does not mean you did anythig wrong - and if 1lb weight increase makes you scared to eat - you have a little bit of a problem - eat sensibly - exercise regulary and the weight will move :)
ur weight will go up and down everyday. thats why it will make it easier if u weigh yourself once a week rather everyday.
