what is the point in tempoary diets?

I know it sounds like a stupid question but after the diet, once theyve lost weight, dont people put it back on after they finish the diet or fast or whatever. or do they start to eat differently for their new weight? ive recently lost a stone and am eating less on a daily basis, if i increase my intake of food slightly will i gain a stone back straight away? apparently its easier to gain weight back than loose it.
many thanks!

I think in a lot of cases, people are trying to lose weight for a specific occasion (e.g. a wedding or summer holidays), rather than thinking of the long term goals. That said, I think starting a diet gets you uses to eating less and introduces you to betterhabits, which people may be more likely to take on perhaps even subconsciously after they finish dieting, I.e. the diet is getting your body used to it and the individual takes responsibility after that to eat healthily and exercise more.
