I know this question is old but Topiramate only effects estrogen based birth controls ( and it can effect them greatly, I wouldn’t trust your dr who put you on them...they should know better). You need to be on a progesterone based birth control, like the ‘mini-pill’, an iud, the shot, or an implant. These won’t be effected! I’m on trokendi (Topiramate) and am having to find a new form of bc now because it’s messing with my pills!
Birth control won't help you if your taking medication for your seizures due to me having a relative that has them. It is not safe do to take both birth control and Topiramate due to them mixing up. Topiramate would make the birth control less useful , so it'll be just a regular pill your taking, it won't protect you due to the Topiramate.
Hopefully this helps. (:
Thank you so much for your helpful information. I called them and they gave me some useful help but they told me to call my doctor to find out for sure. I think I may need more info as well. Maybe another form of birth control?
You can call the pharmacist who filled your prescription. Often they are better able to answer these types of questions than your doctor because they have access to all the databases available that contain information about drug interactions and so on. They are also much easier to get a hold of than most doctors.
