Bleeding 12 years after hysterectomy

What could be the possible reasons for vaginal bleeding when a woman has not had her uterus or cervix for nearly 12 years? In 1994, I had a total hysterectomy (removal of my uterus, cervix, & one ovary). My cervix was removed because of pre-cancerous tissues. I began experiencing a vaginal discharge in Nov. 2005 after recommencing sexual relations after abstaining for six years.  Also in Nov. 2005 I noticed old blood coming from the vaginal area (it was brown) and a slight smell.  I thought maybe the sex was too hard. I was checked in December 2005 by my general practitioner for STDs and HIV.  All the rest results came back normal and/or negative.  The smell and discharge decreased; almost faded totally away.  But now in January 2006, although I have not had intercourse since November 2005, I began smelling the smell again and the discharge has increased.  It has changed in its look and consistency.  It has been white, milky, but lately it has been somewhat watery.  Recently I had a rush discharge where I had to run to the restroom. There was blood on my dress.  The blood is pink.  I went to my primary care physician who said I had a bladder infection because she thought I was bleeding from my urine are and she prescribed an antibiotic.  She did not do a pap smear.  I went to a different doctor later that day and she did a pap smear.  She confirmed that I was actually bleeding from the vaginal area, more specifcally I believe she said from my vaginal cuff.  I am nervously and anxiously awaiting the results.  What are possibilities?

If it was me I'd really want to push my doctor to do more testing to make sure that everything is okay with both your ovaries and to know exactly what is causing your problems.  I think (I'm not an expert of any kind though) if they do an internal ultrasound they should be able to tell if your cyst is larger or if there is anything new (like a cyst on your other ovary).  Don't want to scare you but my doctor told me cyst on my ovary was almost certainly nothing (even right after surgery to remove it) but the lab report said otherwise.  This is the type of thing that it's much better to be safe than sorry (plus if they do a check of everything and you come back fine then you will have peace of mind).  Again, not trying to scare you - it just sounds like you are not getting an answer/solution from them about a legitimate problem you are having.

I had a hysterectomy 22 years ago at 36, now 54 I'm having blooting, stomach cramps, pink spotting and sex is agonising so have given up on that too. I'm terrified. I really don't know what is going on.
I still have both overlies, one of which has a 4mm X 6mm cyst on it.
I've been to the doctor once about 4 months ago just discussed the cyst which she said wasn't a problem, but now I have the spotting and the pain. It even hursts sometimes when I wee. My insides feel like there falling out sometimes.
Has anybody got any ideas on this as my doctors seems useless.

I would get a second opinion.  Cysts need to be watched. They can grow and invade other organs.

My mom had a total hysterectomy in the early 80's. Since then she has had to have her bladder tacked 3 time due to the fact that the tissue would shred and her bladder would fall. The third time the doctor used pig skin grafts and it has held. That was about 12 years ago. In the last 6-7 years she has bleed bright red blood daily to the point that she has to wear a light pad. She has been to she her ob-gyn many many times. He's not sure why she is bleeding. He has catherized the are repeatedly to try and stop the bleeding. It's not helped. She hasn't had sex in about 4 years. She is very frustrated and we are looking for answers.

Hi Ladies,
I had my operation 17 years ago I was 23 years old then and I am now 40, I also had pinkish blood on a tissue after having sex with my husband, it was also quite painful.  Like all of you I was concerned so I came on the internet looking for answers and again like others have posted no one seems to have come back with any real answers, so I am hoping I can help a little.
Firstly let me say if you have experienced any of the above please see your GP, now I did that after not getting any real answers on here, so last Friday I went to my GP she was great went through the usual questions, I like many others on here also had a swab done this was uncomfortable at the time however she explained to me that apart from the obvious things like infection, after many years our vaginal wall thins out you may even experience internal dryness this is normal she gave me a cream to insert every night for 2 weeks and twice a week there after, I am also going back in 2 weeks once my swab results are back to then go on HRT this should then resolve the issue of the thinning and any dryness.
She did confirm that while she was doing my swab that there didn't seem to be any infection which I am hoping just leaves the HRT option.  Yes like any women I am concerned about the swab showing anything else but please see your doctor and discuss these issues I am thankful that my GP was helpful unlike other ladies that have posted on here and seem to have unhelpful doctors.
I hope that me posting this has maybe helped others with what the answer could most likely be and to reassure you that not everything is bad.  I promise to report back when I have my swab results back to confirm that it’s not anything sinister.
Remember  please see your GP.

Just came back from my Gynocologist... I was bleeding after having a Hysterectomy almost 2 years ago.  What happened was there was a growth called Granulation Tissue which is common after surgery.  During sex it can become inflamed and start bleeding.  What she did is take a biopsy (to make sure it is OK) and then coat it with silver nitrate to close the wound...check back with her in 2 weeks and she will make sure it is healing (or healed)...
