Deli Meat in pregnancy

Hello all. We had our annual Christmas party yesterday and had a tray of meats and cheeses. I grabbed a few slices of roast beef off the tray and one of my coworkers told me I should not eat it if I am pregnant (which I am). I knew you shouldn't eat processed meats like bologna, hot dogs, etc, etc...but plain roast beef? It's too late now, I ate it, but now I'm worried. Has anyone heard of this??

Burnt meat leads to colon cancer though! Haha...just kidding! Well, that's what they say, but I was just being a smarty pants (: Yes, there is always SOMETHING about EVERYTHING that we shouldn't do and it is tiring trying to keep up with it all! I will try not to worry about the roast beef I scarfed down the other day. It was good! It's just that after having a miscarriage it's hard not to worry about every little thing.

Everyday they come out with things we should or shoudn't eat. I can't keep up with all of it. Eat egg's or don't? I dunno. I'm not pg, but when I was I ate everything I got my hands on. Both kids are healthy and I am too. Personally, I don't like the meat in the containers ( it smells bad). i buy the kind from the deli. Sometimes I will get a hankerin for a fried bologna sandwish though. I fry it till it's burnt.

ok so I just looked at some stuff...what is done it's done! just like you this week I've eaten deli stuff...turkey sandwich about three of them! ..think of it in the rock age many people ate things like that, my mom ate all these things while pg with me and my brother..etc  I don't think there should be any worries if it was from a good place..it didn't look like a dirty place or so...Im just trying to relax myself about the issue...but those are my thoughts! as for that turkey in the fridge nobody will eat it now =/

we must have wrote our posts at the same time! =)  I agree, there's many women that don't even know about this and will eat many things that we are not supposed to..I did! I thought it was only hot dogs and such I couldn't eat...that turkey looked pretty clean and was a good clean place where it was bought...so no worries..just won't eat any of it anymore! =)

But did you see not even Subway? I LOVE my Subway clubs! Taking deli meat out of my diet will be hard, but I want to be safe. I just never knew this until yesterday! I guess we are all more informed now!

Goodness Sakes!!!

I didn't know either and we have been living off of meat trays and cheese trays for over a week. (Dh's mom passed) There is so much they say not to do now, I am lost! It has been 10 years since my last pregnancy, and I don't remember all of these rules. I just read not to eat fish...well, too late. No fish, no lunch meat, no soft cheese...I know there are more...no hot baths, what else ladies?

I have broken every rule there is:/

baby4me?  you're not alone so have I! I ate fish...cheese and now that stinking trukey this week! I read after eating the fish that it depends which one you eat..some are allowed twice or so a week and it's because of the mercury found in them or so..I gotta find that page with the listings I will and then posted here just for info! =)

It's all in the way the food is handled/stored.  According to your article it's all too common for pregnant women to get Listeria from eating unpasturized foods, and lunch meats.  I wasn't aware of this with my first pregnancy and I ate hotdogs, turkey, salami, and ham sandwiches all the time.  Luckily I never got sick.  I would say just to be safe, not to eat anymore foods like that.

I'm 17wk 3d, I can finally lay down and feel firmness.  I mean it was growing out a bit but still soft, and now it's finally stiffening up some.  I think that we are all alittle too hard on ourselves and alittle to restrictive.  I think almost anything is safe in moderation.  Our parents did it, our grandparents did it, and so on and so on.  We are an age of overanalyzing.  We just need to relax.  Good luck everyone.

I hope time flies by for you until your u/s! I have another scheduled for Jan. 17th, and they should be able to tell me boy or girl then. I think I saw a "hoo ha" at the last u/s, the tech said it was too early and anything would be a guess, but I am putting my money on girl.

I am sure your dh's eyes will light up when he sees the baby in there!!! I had my first u/s very early at 5 weeks and my dh's eyes lit up and all he saw (his words:)"a circle and a dot" lol (gestation sac and yolk sac) LOL!!!

Well, off to watch my story (General Hospital) LOL!!! Talk to you soon!

I remember telling my mom about all these not eating hot dogs and so, she told me she was eating hot dogs and all these things while pg! and everything turned out fine. it's good to be careful now that we know but let's not kill ourselves over what we already ate! lol too late for that =/

Processed meat isn't good for ANYONE.  Do I eat it?  I try not to, but sometimes I do.  Why is it bad, you ask?  Processed meat is chock full of nitrites, which research has linked to all kinds of havoc, including cancer- especially pancreatic cancer.  It can also be a cause of headaches in some people.  Am I trying to say you will die a painful death if you eat this stuff?  Of course not.  But, think about it, if it's unsafe for an unborn child, wouldn't it make sense that it's not too great for adults either?  I'm not trying to alarm anyone if they already have eaten processed meat; just trying to make people aware of what's out there.  You can do what you wish with the information.
