Excessive bleeding for 2 weeks straight on LoSeasonique

I started using LoSeasonique 10 weeks ago. This pills is a 12 week cycle. This is my first birth control pill and I am 17 years old. Midway through week 8 I started spotting. This worsened after 2-3 days as the blood became redder and I got extremely painful cramps more on the right side of my uterus. The bleeding is heavier than any normal period I've ever had before.

I went to my gynecologist who took a sample of tissue and did a sonogram. The sonogram showed nothing abnormal and the lab results have not come back yet. The doctor told me that the bleeding was slowing down and to not worry because it may just be a polyp. She told me to continue taking the pills because it was too late in the cycle for the problem to be caused by the pills.

It has been 2 weeks since I started bleeding. Initially, the blood was brown and within a couple days turned red. then chunks started coming out in heavy amounts, plus heavy cramping. One day a chunk of white soft tissue came out about the size of my thumb. The day after it all ceased, this stage only lasted a day. The next day the blood was brown and light, but no cramping. It then turned dark red and jelly again, cramping has started and is getting worse. Currently, I go through about 3-4 super tampons in a day, with the stuff that comes out being dark red and very jelly-like.

I am on LoSeasonique and I have never missed a dose, take it at exactly the same time everyday, and had absolutely no symptoms before week 8. I work out 6 days a week, I eat very healthy, I am at a normal body weight with no personal or family history of serious diseases. My only problem, besides this, is that I am typically under a lot of stress.

HELP!!! I cannot find anything online that is like my condition. My doctor is not giving me results and I am really worried about my health.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? And better yet, how to fix it.

I just started taking low seasonique.  Before taking it I experienced cramping and heavy bleeding. Now it has become worst!  I ended up in the hospital yesterday because I thought I was going to pass out and experienced excruciating pain.  The ER dr did not even do a pelvic exam.  I seriously though was going to pass out!  Im so glad to read all the postings about this bc pill.  I think all my symptoms are stemming from taking the pill.

Hi on the seasonique, I had to quit taking it, I bled and spotted the ENTIRE time i took it, almost 3 months.  When I stopped about 5 days after, all bleeding stopped.  And my DH claims it turned me into the devil when I took it, it was like i had horrible pms the entire time.  Good luck.

Same problem here. Except I'm in my early 30's, have a predictably stressful life all the time, and have been on a variety of BC pills for nearly half of my life for female problems. The big problem I have with LoSeasonique is that, of all the types of pills I've been on, I've NEVER had this kind of bleeding and cramping I'm having now. Within two weeks of being on LoSeasonique, my breasts were hideously sore. Within three weeks, the spotting started. At about four weeks, the cramping started. The spotting and cramping have lasted for about nine weeks now. However, I am so frustrated with these that I just quit them on Wednesday and demanded another pill from my gyno. Now that I have quit them, the cramps have actually decreased. Furthermore, I haven't even had my period yet, and I am supposed to start my new pill pack tonight. Frustration!!!  I'm a BC veteran, I know how to read my body, I never miss periods, and I know I'm not pregnant. So what is this supposed to mean??? I can't stand this pill and am glad to be rid of it! I am switching to a much more stable pill like Ortho Novum 1-35, Necon 1-35, or Lybrel.

I took that pill last summer for 3 months and had the exact thing happen to me. I bled all 3 months and had cramps, bloating, and major moodiness. Ive never had cramps in my life and i had them all the 3 months. It got really bad and I ended up having to go to the hospital due to a cramp in my right side. It turned out that my Kidney was trying to stop working because it had way too much creatinine. I've asked a few gynos.. and really.. they're no help. The ones in Colorado say the same thing as the ones in Arizona. " Just stick it out, it;ll be worth it." Get off the pill

Hi All, I know this question is old, but I am having the same problems - almost word for word what you described - and can't find anything else on point.  I am on week 7, and have been having a period since week 3.  It started out as a little spotting, then I had the heaviest bleeding I've ever had for 10 days straight, and back and forth.  I've had horrible cramps, bloating, moodiness the entire time.  My doctor keeps telling me to "hang in there, it will be worth it in the end", but that isn't very reassuring.  Did any of you stick it out, and if so, how long did it take for your body to regulate and stop the constant bleeding?  The doctor also told me that it isn't good to stop or change the birth control pill in the middle of the 3 month pack because it could cause my body to go even more out of whack.  If you have changed birth control, what did you change to and did the bleeding stop when you did?

okay me too! i was also searching for cases of abnormal bleeding and my story is exactly like yours also. i'm almost done with my first pack and since then I've had two excessive periods. The first was a 17 day period with really really bad cramps and also that "white tissue" discharge. and now i have one that has been on-going for about 21 days. Talk about a ruined summer. anyways if you want to stick with the Seasonique brand try regular Seasonigue instead of LoSeasonique, for a higher hormone level.

Hello Friend,

I'm not sure if I can give you a definite answer to your question, but I offer my own experiences and a few theories I have.  I have taken both Seasonique (higher dose, took it for about 18 months) and Lo-Seasonique (which I have been taking for about 5 months).

I was on Seasonique for almost 15 months with no side effects, and then my in-laws came to town for 9 months and were practically living in my house and I was really stressed out.  Starting at the beginning of the 15th month, I bled for 1 month straight (which had never happened to me in my life).  I went to the Gyno and I had a physical exam as well as a sonogram of my ovaries, uterus, everything.  The Gyno said I was perfectly normal.  At the end of the month of bleeding, I had my 1 week of period pills and then the bleeding stopped completely.  I think the bleeding was due to stress.  Another indicator was that my total cholesterol went up more than 50 points during that same time frame and then 6 months later it went back down to normal.  Severe stress is a powerful and often undiagnosed cause of disease!  As an example, my boss -- who was otherwise healthy, thin and a professional ballet dancer -- got breast cancer in her late 30s purely from stress.

I switched to LoSeasonique about 5 months ago, because I'm trying to lose weight and my weight loss had stalled after 30 pounds.  After the first month or two, I began to experience a lot of breakthrough bleeding, uterine cramping.  My blood was similar in color and consistency to yours and it changed colors (dark with light streaks to light and then back to dark).  However, I didn't bleed as much as you did, though (never more than 1 super tampon in a day when on regular pills, not period pills), and I didn't have the white mass come out.  HOWEVER, I did bleed A LOT more when I was stressed out on Seasonique earlier last year.

From reading various message boards, I think I have come up with 4 reasons why LoSeasonique causes these types of side effects.

1.  LoSeasonqiue is one of the lowest, if not THE lowest, dose of BC on the market. Therefore, if you switched from a higher dose BC, then it will take awhile for the body to adjust.  Now, the brain is more accepting than the body.  The body could take 6 months or more to adjust.  Patience is key -- and relaxation (see #4 below).

2.  I keep varying the time I take the pill - not on purpose, just because I like to sleep late on weekends  ;-)  On Seasonique that was okay, and it didn't cause an issue, but it appears that with LoSeasonique it can cause real problems.  It appears however, that you've been taking it like clockwork, so great for you!

3.  Starting LoSeasonique at the wrong time in your cycle.  I was so anxious to start LoSeasonique that I started it in month 2 of the 30-month Seasonique cycle and I thought there would be no problem.  What this did was shift my 3-month period cycle by one month.  Well, I think my body is rebelling now.  The body loves regularity.  If you switched birth control pills at the wrong time in your cycle, then that could by why you're having so many symptoms.  When my bleeding finally stops, then I'll have a better idea of whether this is true.

4.  STRESS!  I had a very similar experience to what you're experiencing when I was on Seasonique (higher dose) and very stressed.  So for your health -- and not just because you're on BC -- you need to reduce the stress in your life!  My mom says that most of us are Vitamin D deficient, especially in the winter, so take some vitamins, too.  Stress depletes vitamins in the body even if you're getting enough.

I am currently breakthrough bleeding now and have been for about 2 weeks, but (1) I haven't been taking the pill like clockwork like you have and (2) I have to take the NY bar exam on this coming Tuesday, so I've been under a lot of stress lately with studying as well.  I hope the bleeding stops after the exam!  :-)

And I hope you get a chance to chill out a bit.  Life is too short to succumb to stress and stress-induced illnesses.  Don't worry; be happy! :-D

If you're still experiencing symptoms you don't like, I recommend trying Seasonique (the higher dose version), and see if you don't feel better.  You might have a slight bit of weight gain (maybe 5 pounds), but after your body adjusts you may just feel better.  Or, try another pill altogether.  The great thing about BC pills is that you can keep trying different ones until you find one that works for you AND nearly all of the side effects are reversible once you stop taking a particular brand of pill or switch to a new one.

Good luck!
