A fertile woman (and now that you have begun your periods, you qualify) ovulates once a month (i.e., she produces a ripe egg, and it travels down the Fallopian tube to the uterus, looking to get fertilized by sperm).  If you are just starting out, your cycles will probably not be perfectly regular yet, but say they were -- the egg would pop out of one of your ovaries or the other, about every 28 days, about halfway between your periods.  (Ovulation leads the period by about 14 days.)

Though your egg is only viable for about 24 to 36 hours, most calculators and apps consider the week before your egg is expected to be your fertile window.  This is because sperm (i.e., from a guy) can live 5 to 6 days in the female's reproductive tract.  I'm sure you are not being rash enough at this early stage in life to have unprotected sexual contact, but were someone to do so any time in the five or six days before her ovulation, she could get pregnant when her egg is ready.  That's the fertile period according to calculators and apps.

The important thing to remember is that not all women are that regular.  My sister, for example, ovulates on the 8th day of her cycle (using a count that has the first day of the menstrual flow as Day 1).  That's rather early compared to the Day 14 that is often used as an average day of ovulation on an app.  Some women ovulate late.  Some women ovulate early some months, and late other months.  The takeaway here is not to think that an app telling you when your fertile window is, means that at other times you are not fertile.  You're better off assuming that you are always fertile.
