Food cravings

Hi, I'm 16 and I'm new to this but when ever I start my period I keep craving for food. I was wondering about what I should do to get rid of the craving, because I'm a little scared of gaining weight just because of this. Thankyou in advance.

Your hormones are to blame for not being able to keep your head out of the refrigerator!  During this time, the stress hormone cortisol spikes, and the feel-good hormone serotonin dips. This fluctuation makes your body crave foods with lots of sugar and fat because they boost levels of serotonin and combat cortisol production, making you feel happier and more relaxed. That is, until you crash and need another sugary or fatty snack.
There are many things you can do to avoid the need to constantly graze while you're having your period. Eating three hearty and healthy meals a day will go a long way to curb the cravings. For instance, an egg, a piece of toast with peanut butter, glass of juice and a piece of fruit for breakfast rather than your possible bowl of colorful Fruity O's, will keep your blood sugar far more in balance and ward off the crazy cravings. A mid morning and/or mid afternoon snack of yogurt and some fruit are better choices than grabbing a doughnut in the cafeteria. If chocolate is your downfall, trying to deny yourself ANY will only make your cravings worse in the long run, so allow yourself a SMALL portion of DARK chocolate every now and again during your period. And by every now and then, I don't mean every 5 minutes! It's going to take some will power on your part.........you can't just magically wish away the cravings because they are real, but you're the one who controls what and how much goes in. If you're feeling up to it during your periods, try to get in a little more exercise.
Most of us gain a little extra weight during our periods........most of which is just water weight and the solution to that sounds contradictory, but drink MORE water. The more you drink, the more you pee and the more you pee the less you weigh.
The one thing I do NOT want you to do is get fixated on a little bit of weight gain and end up with an eating disorder! I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you what a nightmare that becomes.
As you get older you WILL come to accept that a bit of weight gain or bloating is just one more thing we women have to deal with and you WILL learn to deal with it. If you feel it's becoming a problem, speak with your mom or the school nurse.
You'll be fine..........just stay smart!
