Mirena, and discharge

I have had my mirena IUD for, about 3 or 4 years..my period pops up every so often but this time i had about a day of actual blood and now it has turned into a light brown stringy mucous with a little bit of pink. Is this normal?

I like it, never caused me any problems. I had a copper IUD at first but my periods were painful and i had such heavy bleeding i was soaking through extra heavy tampons and pads within 40 minutes. I had it replaced with the pill and within the first 3 months i was pregnant. I lost the baby but after that i switched to mirena and the heavy flow stopped, infact my periods sorta stopped all together. I have read hideous side effects about mirena but it has worked for me.

Correction: in my previous post I said estrogen but I meant progestin.

Patience415:  I am looking into it myself as my doctor recommended it to me, but from what I've gathered the benefits far outweigh the risks.  I would recommend you talk to your doctor as not all birth control is the right fit for everyone.  I'd also recommend you read up on the Mirena website.  One thing many women don't realize is it can take 3-6 months of crazy irregular bleeding before it starts working like it should.  This is normal and for some women that's a price worth paying for 4+ years of being mostly period free and not having to worry about contraception.

Have you had any problems with mirena. I am thinking about getting it but I'm scared about it. I am 19, live with my boyfriend and never had a baby. I want kids just not anything soon. Something going into my uterus scares me and no one is responding to my posts.

It sounds like you have breakthrough bleeding.  I was told by my doctor that the IUD lasts about 5 years.  When you start noticing more and more breakthrough periods, that means the estrogen that is in the IUD is running low and the IUD needs to be replaced.
