Back on January 4th I took the morning-after pill. About 3-4 days later, I starting having heart palpitations... my heart felt like it was skipping beats. I thought it would go away in a few days, but it didn't. I went to the Urgent Care today (Jan. 18) and they did an EKG on me. The problem is, this strange skipped heartbeat only happens maybe once every 5 minutes, and it usually happens when I'm stressed somehow. So during the EKG, they didn't actually get one of my 'skipped beats' on the tracing.
The doctor diagnosed me with 'junctional escape beats', although as a 4th year nursing student, and after seeing one of my strange heartbeats on the monitor when everyone was out of the room (of course it had to happen then), I am more inclined to say it's infrequent PVC's I'm having.
Regardless of what it is, my question is... could the morning after pill have caused this to start? The doctor said no, but I've seen a lot of discussions online about the link between hormones and PVC's/arrhythmias. Will this go away on its own after some time? Should I start the atenolol that the doctor prescribed for me? I am hesitant to do that, because of the side effects that atenolol can have. Please advise.
