You shouldn't worry about it. I got my first period when I was 11 or 12 and since as long as I can remember, it's hardly ever on time. Sometimes it would even be late for 2 weeks.

My doctor told me when I started at age 11 that it would be normal to miss or have abnormal periods until after a first pregnancy.... after that it wold normalize. I didn't become sexually active until I was 16 at no choice of my own. I missed every other month. She said teenagers stress over normal teenage stuff and that, that was the cause of the missed cycle.

The monthly cycle will vary from time to time. When I first starting getting my period it always came on the 15th. A few years later my cycle changed, and every 3 months or so my cycle would begin the 25th instead of the 15th. Maybe you could use a calendar to note the changes in her cycle.

Dear Lulu2213:

I have three daughters, and all three of them have reacted differently to getting their periods.  NONE of them were regular in the beginning.  In fact, we finally ended up putting the oldest on birth control pills just to regulate her (and make her easier to live with)!!  At one of the Dr. visits for one of my daughters, we were told that its possible that the earlier periods were "non-productive" (i.e., no egg was produced/ released) and with the later ones, there were.  It could also just be a hormonal "shift" in your daughter's make-up.  It could also be her stressing about the fact that she was five days late!  Ahhhhh - the wonders of womanhood.

I got my first period when I was 12...i spotted for 2 weeks. Then I didn't get it again for 6 months. Then it finally got normal and has been ever since. And my mom nor I ever worried about it. She's young, it happens.

Any kind of stress can cause it to be late...even a cold. I wouldnt worry unless it goes too long. I think its common for a teen to have irregular periods, i still do and im 44!
