Pain in left ovary, lower back, and the area in-between my hip bones.

Hello, for the last 3 or 4 periods I have been having severe pain in my left ovary, lower and middle back right along the spin and spreading out, and the space all between my hip bones. Sometimes it is so severe all I can do is curl up and cry without moving. The last 3 periods have been unusually heavy, the one before this one soaked through my pad and all the way down my leg to my knee. The pain is always associated with my left side. Sometimes I have vague warnings and other times none at all.

My grandmother has a history or Ovarian cancer on her side of the family. She had the same pain on her left side every time, and finally at the age of 40 she had to have a Hysterectomy.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to what this could be?

First, how do you know it's your ovary that's hurting -- they're pretty small.  Second, it sounds like endometriosis.  Third, get to a doctor!

Never be afraid of going in to see the doctor because you think it might be bad news.  Worrying really does make you sicker.  No matter what it is, the sooner you fight it, the sooner you'll feel better.  Also, if what the doctor says doesn't seem right to you (especially after you've checked all over the internet), then go to another.

Lastly, I don't think it's your problem, but it doesn't hurt to take B12.  Three years ago, my periods were getting heavier and heavier, and many times I was doubled over in pain.  I started taking sublingual B12, and by the NEXT month, I was back to normal.

Good Luck!

Hi there and welcome.  Well, you could have a simple cyst (non cancer) that is not uncommon for women.  I've had that and it sounds similar to what you describe.

But since you worry about ovarian cancer and a family history, contact your doctor and have a pelvic.  Ask to have a CA 125 test which is the blood marker for ovarian cancer.

I will tell you, my mother in law had ovarian cancer (and passed away from it).  It's a silent killer.  There are few symptoms early on.  Pain becomes more so as it advances and then ascites is often the first sign.  They find there pants don't fit and they aren't eating more.  They do have some gi discomfort and pains though so I think if you are having some issues, you should be checked out.

But to me, it sounds like a cyst.  however, I am not a doctor and the internet should not preclude an examination by one.  Call your doctor.  good luck
