I am pregnant and live in a colder climate. The summer lasts 2, maybe 3 months if we're lucky.  But, if I lived in a warmer climate where the sun shone hot and the rays were lovely would you tell me to not go outside?  Or to wrap myself up with clothing so none of my skin was exposed?  Be real people and give your head a shake.  Tanning in a tanning bed for a minimal time twice, maybe three times, a month won't harm you or your baby.  For all of you who live in a warmer climate and go outside, well look at the harm you are doing to your skin and your baby...maybe you should run and hide?  Don't let the rays age you!  And all you pregnant ladies out there who may have a wonderful vacation booked to a hot destination maybe you should rethink that, it means you'll have to leave your bubble!

....why wouldnt you go to a concert or bar oh and i suppose i shouldnt go to freakin chuck e cheese either because they serve beer as well??? My baby is going to get fetal alcohol syndrome from my concert or chuck e cheese or maybe its the loud noise??? are you serious i think you are not a mom just retarded.who are you people do any of you even know how to use the internet do your freakin research before you post stupid answers that you thought of in your own head... oh hot baths take em all the time its the only thing that makes my back quit hurting. I think this girl is smart enough to not get so over heated in a tub or tanning bed to hurt her unborn child. alot of these posting peeps are totally a holes anyway do what you think is okay dont drink alcohol but hey dont be miserable bc your pregnant.

I agree with panama00. She couldn't have said it better. And just a lil FYI for all those who swear the sun is so much better for your skin than tanning beds and always have to write such bad things about tanning beds in general...the sun has bad UBV rays also, atleast in the tanning beds now-a-days...the bad UBV rays are controlled. They have different levels. Tanning beds back in the day were horrible for your skin, so I can see where some of these people are coming from. But we are in 2011 now people!! Tanning beds have come a long way. They may actually be better for you than the actual sun. Incase you guys didnt know level 1 is usually the cheapest which is why it has the most UBV rays in it, not good. (You get what you pay for). Level 2 is a little bit better, level 3 (a little more expensive) and has only around 3% of bad UBV rays in it, and the level 4 bed (most expensive, but still not too crazy) has less than 1% of bad UBV rays in it! No matter how much money you pay, you cant take the bad UBV rays out of the sun. So where do you think your freckles and sun spots are coming from? If you are thinking about tanning in a bed...call your local tanning salon and ask questions about their beds and the levels and find out how much UBV rays are in each bed. You'll know which one to choose. Obviously the less UBV rays the better. Make sure you're using a tanning bed approved lotion and stay hydrated. If you are pregnant I'd say be smart about it. Eat healthy, be sure to take your prenatal vitamin everyday and ask your doctor what they think is best for you. Enjoy life! :)

In response to Sherman about tanning & ageing... I'm 28 and look 23, my mother is 46 and looks 30. The women in my family age very well, not to mention, there are a TON of things that may make you age other than just tanning. If you do anything other than walk a straight line and I mean a very straight line then you are putting yourself at risk, therefore, I've always felt that you only live once you might as well enjoy it while you can. I mean, what if you walk that boring straight line every day and one day you don't look when you cross the street and get hit by a car and die, well then you walked that straight line for nothing. Plus, tanning is very good for you in the winter, everyone gets the winter blues and battles emotional stress due to lack of sun and being inside, you wouldnt believe how much a couple minutes in a tanning bed raises someone's mood in the middle of winter. It's amazing all the little perks of tanning, other than just the actual tan. Once again, it's all about being smart, use lots of lotion, take your vitamins and take care of yourself and everything will be just fine. I've been tanning for twelve years and it has yet to affect me one bit.

Actually, in 2006 when I was pregnant with my son I was a tanorexic (addicted to tanning beds) so that was the first ? I asked my doctor. This is how it went: "Is it okay for me to still go tanning", the doc replied "No, you'll get skin cancer", I then said "I'm not worried about me, I'm asking for the baby. Will it harm my baby", he then said "You can still tan if you'd like, there has not been any proof that it will harm the baby, although, I do ask that you make sure you're hydrated and don't over heat yourself. Leave the fan on & leave the bed open. Just make sure not to raise your body temperature too high and everything will be fine". I tanned through out my entire pregnancy & if anyone ever said anything to me, I simply told them my doc said it was okay. Granted, I did not tan as much as I normally would but I still went once every few weeks up until the last few weeks of my pregnancy. My son is now 4 yrs old & has always been in perfect health his since the day he was born. I will admit, I did put a towel over my tummy jus for my own security & I'm currently 5.5 months pregnant with my second child, I do not tan this pregnancy due to lack of funds and let me tell ya, its makes a difference. My self esteem is the complete opposite this pregnancy and nothings different other than tanning. So my advice is ladies, its your body & your baby, there's no proof it'll harm your baby so go for it, just be smart.

Don't you tanners care about looking like an old boot by the time your 40??  I just can't wrap my head around living for the moment so much that your willing to give up having healthy and youthfull looking skin for as long as possible.  As for tanning when your pregnant..put your child first, your a mother now!!

Tanning while you are pregnant is actually good for you and your baby. UVB lights give off vitamin D. In a study it said vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk of premature births and boost the health of newborn babies. They say in the last trimester of pregnancy is when you just need to make sure your not over heating yourself. so I say tan until your getting uncomfortable.

Well I personally tan on a regular basis, and I am almost 5 months pregnant. My obgyn doctor assured me it was fine, and would do no harm to the baby:)

I have recently started a new  job at a salon where I get free tanning as a added benifit. I am 3 months pregnant so I was not sure if I was able to tan. I called the tanning place (not at my employment location) and asked their professional opinion. They said that it is fine, the skin is to thick for it to harm the baby, also studies show that the vitamin d you get from tanning is really good for your skin as long as you dont over do it, being paraniod I still went to my doctor and asked what she thought and she said it was ok as long as I dont get overheated, so I went tanning last night for 5 mins and did not even feel warm, the tanning bed has 5 fans in it. I felt way hotter last saturday when I was out and about....So I would have to say it is ok, but don't go for a long at a time, and be safe as you would any other day. Good luck

the best thing to do is lay out in the sun for no longer than an hour a day.  the tanning bed is bad. being in one when ur pregnant its like putting ur baby in an oven. don't do it u could seriously hurt the baby or even kill it.

I better start paying attention to the dates of these posts.
It's been two years; what did you eventually decide to do and how did it go?

I used to tan all the time, and a few months before I became pregnant I stopped because both of my doctors told me not to tan even I was going to be trying to get pregnant in the next couple of months. Not only that, the tanning salon has signs up that say you shouldn't be tanning if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant. There is too much artificial light involved to be risking your unborn baby with that.

Remember, the day you become pregnant, your child becomes number one...you are number 2.  :)

And even though it wasn't planned, unfortunately, when I did become pregnant, I miscarried at 10 1/2 weeks, not because of the tanning. We're going to try again in March. (I'm giving myself 3 regular periods before I try again)

We actually were planning on getting pregnant for the first time in March, but a trip to Europe had me forget what day we were on; we were using the rhythm method. We were always safe the 1st and 2nd day after my period ended, but we were not careful on the 3rd day, and that's how it happened.

Anyway....don't tan while you're pregnant.  :)

Have you and your boyfriend discussed how you are going to pay
for the baby now and later?  Since it takes to make a baby,
he should be involved in the financial decisions.  By the way,
I was wondering how old you are?  You sound young.  Is there
a trusted relative or one of your friends' mothers you can
talk to about your situation?  You'd be surprised how good
an older woman's advice can be.

I tan when I layout by the pool now.  If I stay out there for more than an hour I get burnt and is red, but the next day or so it tans my skin.  I tan outside all the time and I am 21 weeks.  I just wouldn't do the tanning bed thing.  My mom told me when she was pregnant with me she went to the beach not really thinking that it would hurt her to be out there all day and she got sun poisoning.  She had to go to the hospital.  So when I go I use a light sunscreen.

Once again I would stay out of the tanning bed. I've always heard dont go anywhere you wouldn't take a newborn baby. Tanning beds, concerts, bars, etc. Maybe it wont hurt your baby but who knows for sure. Just think of your little peanut first and you'll always make the right choice, and for you that might be getting in the tanning bed. Best of luck.

just a couple things to add.

she should stay away from certain herbs and teas that have them in it. it's easy to find out which ones, you can just go online and type in "herbs and pregnancy". it should give a list of whats okay/not.

i also heard to stay away from eating foods that have any colorings in it. you know how you see on the package ingredients yellow #5 blue #7 (whatever they are).
i think someone mentioned the deli meats that have nitrates.

make sure she takes prenatal vitamins.

so much to think about huh?

The only reason I was wondering was because of the way I burn in the summer.  And I'm always by the pool or outside so I just wanted to see if anyone tans while pregnant.  here is the website for the article I read on tanning while pregnant  http://www.pregnancylounge.com/tanningbed.php if anyone is interested in reading it. Thanks for all the input!

I would have to say no. If they say no to hot baths how is tanning ok? Don't even risk it, I don't think they've done enough studies to know if it's ok or not. Use a self tanner that's safe during pregnancy. We always want to look good and tan, but when you become pregnant and become a mommy there's alot of things you have to give up!! You're going to lose that tan anyway, for 6 weeks you're pretty much going to be tending to the new baby and of course not going to be able to take baby to the tanning bed with you!! Just wait until after you have the baby!

is all of that necessary for the sake of your unborn child your not pregnant forever instead of the what ifs just dont do it its not worth risking your baby for if something did happen you would live with the guilt all your life for a silly sun tan!!!
