Severe cramps

I often get severe cramps, pretty much every month the first three days. They get so bad that I can't walk, sit, or sometime breath properly. I went to the doctors and they found out I'm anemic and they told me to take ibuprofene (at least 3x 400mg), it has worked very well but my mother's getting concern about whether it's a good idea and if there are any other alternatives.
What alternatives are there for people with severe cramps? And would it be worth it to visit the gynocologist about this?
