Skin over cervix

My GYN was performing a colposcopy to detect any abnormal cervical cells and while she was able to obtain cells from outside the cervix, she was not able to dilate the cervix to examine the inside because she could not find an opening!  Apparently, she said skin had had grown over the cervix and the only way to get an internal biopsy in the cervix is to open it up surgically.  My GYN says that skin over the cervix is rare but she has seen it before. I am postmenopausal and have never been on HRT.  I have taken bio-identical hormones, but stopped because I felt they were not doing any good.  She prescibed estrogen by using a 90 day vaginal ring (Estring - 2mg) to soften the cervical tissue which may help avoid cutting into the skin for dilation.  I have always had normal pap smears, but last year I was given a routine HPV test and they found some abnormal cells.  This is the reason that a colposcopy is needed.  Has anyone else experienced this problem with skin over the cervix?  And if so, what procedure was done?

I recently had the same thing.  I had a coloposcopy done about a year ago (virtually painless my a**) with no complications, and the abnormal cells were removed to be tested. I came out cancer free.

Just over the last 2 months, my cervical skin grew over, completely closing my cervix.  Unfortunately, with the complete closure of my cervix for almost 2 months (I thought I was pregnant), I had a severe infection of my uterus, that if left for another week, could have resulted in an emergency hysterectomy.  I'm only 30, with the hopes of having children, so that would have destroyed me.

I also had a 6cm cyst on my right ovary, which was also found out during my ultrasound after my gyn found "swelling".

I had to have a laproscopy done to remove the cyst; my cervix needed to be cut open & was, for lack of a better way of explaining it, "stretched" open by cutting it open; a d&c with a hysteroscopy.

Fortunately, I was lucky enough to have an express lane through the emergency room & get this all taken care of immediately.  I am so grateful for my doctor's quick diagnosis and concern.  I did not lose my ovary (with the cyst) or uterus, and I am so lucky!

I cannot stress enough about the signs.  If you have ANY pain, go see your doctor.  If you lose your appetite, lose sleep, cannot pee or have a bowel movement, feel exhausted for no reason, lack of colour in your skin... anything that is out of the ordinary, GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!

Good luck & don't be afraid to go back to your doctor.  I shouldn't have been so stubborn, and it landed me in the hospital.  I will never think twice about taking care of even the littlest of pains.
