Still heavy period even after starting birth control

After the birth of my second child in 2013 my periods became very heavy. I absolutely dreaded starting because I knew I'd leak through at some point and was having to change tampons every couple hours. My periods have always been extremely irregular, but never heavy like this. I went to my doctor in October of this year and had a pap (which came back normal) and he said putting me on birth control would fix the heavy periods. I don't need birth control because I've had my tubes tied, but was fine with taking it to get rid of these crazy heavy periods and to make them regular. I finished my first month of Sprintec and started my period a couple days ago. It's just as heavy as usual, including passing clots. Any reason why the birth control isn't helping?
