At risk for HPV?

My exboyfriend (we broke up about a week ago) called me today informing me that he thinks he may have HPV. He has scheduled an appointment with the doctor for next week; however, I know there is no test to determine if he actually has the virus or not. We began sleeping together in March of last year, and I had my last pap smear a few months after in May. The results were normal. I have had no symptoms like genital warts, which is what he is experiencing. Should I be worried that I, too, may be infected? Is another pap smear in order?

You may not test positive for years down the road. The truth of the matter is you are now at risk of developing it and will be for the rest of your life. Get checked anually. Good luck.

Honestly it's quite possible you have it. Many people never show symptoms and so most people at one time or another get HPV. For some that never causes a problem. What I suggest is get a pap smear done this year, instead of once every other year (if you normally do it every other year). If your dr asks why tell him/her that your ex has suspected HPV and you don't want to chance missing an abnormal result. Also, if you haven't done so already, talk to your dr about getting the HPV vaccination. This vaccination protects against several different strands of HPV that can cause cancer so even if you do have one strand, it's still a good idea to get it.
