Because depending on the generation you were raised by, girls weren't trained that they should be aware of their body and that self care is as important as your social or homekeeping skills. We have difficulty talking to trusted friends and family members about our health, much less a doctor. If something seems wrong or off, God forbid we may actually be sick and can't meet and fulfill whatever image we feel that we have to live up to: the matriarch of the family, the bread winner, the rock or backbone of the family, the support of our friends or family. We think that being sick will mar that image and we will be, or seem to be, less than. As if ignoring symptoms and avoiding doctor visits will erase the fact that we need to go. We should realize that we are as, if not more, important than the ones that we are being strong for. Because, in order for us to continue to be there for others, we have to keep our physical, mental, and spiritual selves healthy.
