What could be causing darkened areolae?

I've noticed my areolae have gotten darker over the last couple of weeks. My breasts are also a bit sore. My breasts have felt sore in the past - usually during or right before my period. But my period hasn't started and I don't have any usual PMS symptoms, and I have never noticed my areolae or nipples change color. Could this stem from geneal hormonal changes?

Yes, normal hormonal changes can cause breast tenderness and nipple changes.  I'm assuming you have ruled out pregnancy?

I haven't taken a pregnancy test. I was hoping it was just hormonal changes. My period isn't supposed to start until this week.
